| 1. Cherries in any form, definitely. |
|
Fresh cherries are in season this time of year, so they should be easy enough to find, but dried cherries or cherry juice (unsweetened) work just as well.

I drink a lot of water and try to ingest a lot of flavonoids. Still, there is suffering.

| 3. My BF kept his gout under control for over a year |
|
by taking cherry pills. Then he got a bad attack earlier this year - the worst he's ever had. We tried cherry juice, pills, cherries, a vegan diet, lots of water, anti-inflammatory pills.. nothing worked. He went to the doc and got a scrip - I don't know for sure but I think it was allopurinol... and it cleared up within a couple of days. He only takes the medication if he feels his toe start tingling. He mostly tries to control it with diet - lots of fruit and veggies, lots of water, easy on the red meat and legumes and no shell fish (his favorite dish is brown beans... I haven't made it since his last attack tho he has had baked beans at summer cookouts)

| 4. My hubby was using allopurinol but was still getting |
|
nights where he felt the pain. So, he bought some cherry concentrate capsules along with the allopurinol. After about a week of taking three times the dose (3 caps) of cherry capsules, he noticed he wasn't feeling pain. He's down to one capsule a day. He told his doctor who told him that he'd stay with the cherry capsules if that was making such a big difference. Besides, my hubby has some kidney problems an cannot take NSAIDs at all. Better he should get relief from a natural source along with his daily allopurinol.

| 5. The diet is such a pain in the ass |
|
that a lot of people opt for the drugs.
They're not much better and the diet still has to be done during a flare.

| 6. Controlled with dietary changes, 3-4 years on now. |
|
Essentially reduced protein, esp. meat, consumption about 80%, same with beer, pay close attention to hydration, occasional fasting for a few days, lost some weight. Lots more veggies, little or no fast food, pay close attention to how affected parts feel. Works great, no acute attacks in years, but it's a "learning process".

And the cherry concentrate pills sound like a good idea.
I'm on allopurinol but have recently developed a tophi on my thumb joint despite that.
The "gout diet" thing didn't work at all for me. Though I do stay away from beer.
Love cherries and eat them all the time - dried out of season.
