CPAP users - mask issues

Any CPCAP users - I would be interested to hear your stories of different mask issues. I amy having trouble getting a consistent seal w/ my Res Med Quatro.

1. I've found that I get a better seal when I have it on looser than I think it should be.

When it's a little loose, mine can "puff out" and seal properly. If I strap it on too tight, the pressure pushes the air out around my face.

2. The masks actually leak more

if you have the straps to tight...the mask should sort of float on your face.

3. My husband's nose is permanently scarred thanks to these stupid masks.

Then he broke out in hives and had to switch from silicone to a cloth mask.

Don't let them talk you into a mask that doesn't fit. It will tear up your nose. Then you may develop an allergy from it in about 3 months.

6. that must be very frustrating, but

"these stupid masks" are saving a lot of lives. Silicon allergy is pretty rare, so it is a nonissue for most people. Usually it is a latex allergy because the two are often mixed. Switching to a pure silicon seal/device usually takes care of issues.

4. clean face and seal with handwipes

I use WetOnes (the citrus scented version doesn't stink too bad) and try to get mask on before it dries completely, others have used other concoctions. As mentioned above try making it looser rather than tighter or shifting straps on back of head (depending on model - didn't look yours up). Beyond that try a different model if you are allowed by insurance or have the extra bucks. Also lots of info here http://www.apneasupport.org/index.php

5. I had trouble with the mask types, no matter what I tried. I switched to a device that

places little "buds" (much like iPod ones) in my nostrils.

It is not a "tight" fit, but actually stays in better. I also do not have the straps tight at all. The "give" allows me to turn over and easily adjust the noseplugs so that they are "airtight" again.

I heartily recommend this type versus the mask that covers much of your face.

Another plus, I can ear my glasses even while I have the CPAP on.

7. Make sure you clean your mask daily and wash your face before bed

Also, my doc gave me the hint to use a thin layer of KY jelly on the mask to make a better seal. Don't use the kind that heats up, tho. That's for different purposes... :evilgrin:

If you're still having problems you might need to change the mask size or type. I used to use the kind that fits over the nose but once I changed to the type with the nose buds I don't have nearly the problems with air leaks.

9. I use a nasal pillow mask

It rests against your nostrils, but that is basically the only place the mask itself touches your face.

10. Has anybody hear used a full face mask

I am considering getting a Respironics FitLife Total Face Mask.

It's more expensive, and I don't know if insurance will cover it, but there is no point doing this if I can't get to sleep because the thing keeps me awake and gives me headaches, etc.
