All Things Considered, April 28, 2005 · The ivory-billed woodpecker was thought to be extinct. Now, scientists say it's been sighted again and conservationists are planning ways to protect it. The striking bird has been discovered in the Big Woods area of Arkansas. Christopher Joyce reports.

All Things Considered, April 28, 2005 · Our commentator has been dreaming of ivory-billed woodpeckers since she was eight years old. She and other bird-lovers around the world are excited at news that the species, once feared extinct, has been rediscovered in the Arkansas wilderness. But now she's begun to worry whether the bird can survive all the attention mankind will heap on it.

2. This is soooo exciting

I live in a heavily wooded area of which the developers are trying their damnedest to destroy every inch. We have a lot of old dead trees around which the ivory billed must have to survive.

My SO is an avid bird lover. A couple of years ago, we thought we heard one (we listened to the recordings of their call--yes, that is actually available on the internet). A week or so later, we could have sworn we saw one about dusk. We reported it to our local Audubon Chapter.

This is one of the many reasons Texas desperately needs a long-term use plan, and one that protects what is left of the Big Spooky Thicket. Rick Perry (Governor Goodhair) assures me that there is plenty of land left in Texas 'fer huntin'. He is an idiot.

3. Do you live near the "Big Spooky Thicket?"

That sounds cool. I live in a "mixed growth" forest north west of Atlanta. I have dozens of the "Pileated," which is also impressive, but I'd love to see the "Ivory-billed."

5. Actually, a little west of

the Big Thicket proper. We are more in what's left of the southern part of the Piney Woods. We have a Great Horned who lives nearby. I've been able to call him to as close as our neighbor's lot, but then I duck and run for cover when he spies me. We had hawks nest in one of our big trees this spring. The babies are out of the nest now and hunting. They get on the ground and walk around then fly up to the trees. We have Great Pyrenees to protect our chickens and other fowl. The hawks drive them crazy.

6. Hi, neighbor! I live in a mixed growth forest some 50-70 miles NW

of you. Your profile says you're in Marietta but I'm guessing you're more like somewhere NW of Kennesaw? I also have pileateds that must nest nearby. Sighting or hearing the pileateds still thrills me, after living out here with them since 1975, and the same is true for the owls.

Truly great news about the ivory-billed; it's been so many many years since they've been seen. May they live long and prosper.
