Historic Four Women in Space at the Same Time

Today marks the day when more women than ever before are working in space.

Four women will rendezvous at the International Space Station - the largest ever gathering of women in space.

Today may be just a footnote when people look back in a thousand years but it is possibly the day historians note as the day when gender equality in spaceflight finally became a reality.

So, who are these women in space making history?

1. Cool accomplishment

I enjoyed telling my daughters about these women this morning - only I couldnt remember their names when my girls asked me.

Soapbox time: to me, it's very disappointing that the orbiter flights to the ISS, and the astronauts themselves, don't get more press. Not that I need "uplifting" news every day, but rather than following the mantra of "if it bleeds, it leads" with the newscasts, how about some lead stories on these 4 women (and the rest of the crews) and what they're doing while on orbit (one of them is a trained teacher). I would love to see the astronauts' names being the ones that are "household" names, rather than all 29 of Tiger Woods cheating partners....

2. It's interesting that Metcalf-Lindenburger is uncommonly young

for an astronaut (just 34).

Edit: Ah..she's the Educator Specialist, so not a career astronaut. I suppose that explains it.

3. This is a little different then the first all black Starters for a major Leagur team

It was in 1971 with the Pittsburgh Pirates (Who would later win the World Series that year)

The significance of that fact was known to the players on the team before the game began, but not to the fans nor even the Manager when he made out the roster. Manager Murtaugh knew who the opposing pitcher was going to be and picked the best nine players he had available on that day. It was NOT a conscience choice to pick nine black players, it just happen it was the best nine players he had on that day.

Hopefully the same is with these four women, it was the best four people for this position NOT the best four women. I do not know, it looks like it was but just like the first all black starting line up people will question and only time will tell if it was one or the other.
