I don't know if you noticed the report from UNICEF this month but i found it really shocking. It stated that over half the children on the planet are starving, dying from disease or completely abandoned because of war, aids, or other conditions. .....I knew there were lots of kids in peril but until this week had no idea it was more than half the kids on the planet.

People, we have to do something about this. It is a disgrace. We start, it seems, with kicking bush out..by getting new elections in OHIO, and even better, --- nationwide.

World food production, last i looked, was enough. Anyone have recent calorie/day/person stats?

1. Lots of problems the world over - solutions?

I don't think there is any one solution to all the ills, but I am game to looking at each thing and trying to find a way to help out (from churches sending to aid to us doing something).

Might be a good thread for ideas and analysis of all the different areas and problems.

3. US has a big say in what happens all over..

so the solution ...lucky for us.. happens to be in our baliwick.

If WE get bush out... we have a big effect on how well the world does.

it comes down to Ohio. It can get rid of bush, fast.

It comes down to the rallies today, and others like them in this week, and next, and next.

4. Outside of depending on government to solve these things

What can we do as people? I am not prone to waiting on someone else to jump in and do it all. Donations, charities, et al - there has to be more to the solution than a president....

5. well, charities have never ended poverty: Gov needed

I understand your feelings. However, i have read, and it seems true, that relying on charity has never ended poverty.

Am i wrong? Open to evidence on this.

ON the other hand, in the thirties, gov action did a lot to put a floor under ALL who were in poverty. A weak floor, but more than the churches had been able to do.

So i still look to the gov.

6. The gov within the country under it's power perhaps

Like the government of the US of that of old days (ala catholic church, et al).

So sure, within it's own borders maybe - but worldwide?

Then there is the question - why should they care? In an evolution sense the fittest survive and the weakest die and the species is better for it. So if we subscribe to that theory then maybe we should not help. I don't subscribe to that one myself :) but some may see it as a logical conclusion to the ideal.

So what group(s) have went forth and tried to help others in foreign lands with their basic needs?

7. If the fittest up suffering of Man, then species is not bettr for fittest

If the fittest who survive , increase the total suffering of survivors.. due to their uncaring nature, which is why they let evolution continue to happen in the first place... then having those fittest around is NOT good for the species.

I say, what is good for the species is to act now to reduce suffering. Now and in the future.

That is reason to care.. about wretched kids.

As to reaching out to other nations, ... our gov has a lot to say about the kindness/cruelty of most other nations. Witness our recent reversal of three stolen foreign elections. Reported on another thread.

More reason to act thru the gov... today, we see the charities are unable to end homelessness. Yet the gov could. the gov DID, before Reagan-the-monster.

I dont see any other solution.

Open to ideas , though.

8. If we are the government

Then we can act outside of it - pool our funds and resources to accomplish the goal no matter who sits in the oval office. Depending on others to accomplish things will often let one down :)

10. The DIY ethic...

...is something that needs to be more encouraged amongst those who are politically active, but often times thin more in terms of getting the government to "Do something" rather than just going out and doing it and maybe getting government grants eventually or recognition of the issue. I think alot of Democrats tend to think that when Republicans or Bush cut funding to a program, that they must instantly rally to get funding restored, without ever thinking that they could probably do the job themselves, probably on a smaller scale, till fortunes went there way.
