Resources for friend to be evicted soon

Hi there folks. You have always been great help to me so I'm writing with a question.

We have an acquaintance who is about to be evicted from the room he's staying in. His family will not take him in. He is currently working two jobs, but he cannot afford to pay more than about $350/mo for an apartment. We are trying to find some resources for him.

This is a fellow with several physical problems, not the least of which is that he is morbidly obese. This causes problems with having roommates -- I know because he stayed at my boyfriend's place for months without paying rent, and was a horrible person to live with, left damage behind, etc. HOWEVER, us being liberals after all, we do want to give him some resources even though we can't really afford to have him stay with us. (Nor is it any good for him to have that sort of situation, mind you.)

He has contacted HUD here in Virginia (this is northern virginia) but the waiting list for Section 8 (or 6 or whatever) housing is months and months long. We have tried to find homeless shelters in the area and urged him to call to see what can be done for his situation. Besides that, can you think of any resources he should contact so that he can have a roof over his head this winter?

3. Check your local church orgs. If you have a

St Vincent DePaul ..they are a good start. They are connected to other charitable groups..Salvation Army etc.

Be persistant though, they get so many calls and often have a network set up that knows other resources..kind of like an underground railroad...If you tell them there is NO Where else but the street for this person and be straight about his physical condition it all helps..It will be the most helpless they will assist. no relatives, no friends, but IS EMPLOYED...thats a big plus...it means that he may only need short term help...they will be more apt to assist in that circumstance. Be aware though, they will generally help people with children first..but the fact of his employment may make a difference.
