Hey, I just saw where the horses won!
That is absolutely terrific! First thing this Congress has done that I have been for.

2. Let's not let our guard down. They've been trying to do end runs...
...around us on this forever. It's a continual battle to make sure they don't push this one, or other bills through.

3. Well, and did you see the wording - not for human consumption
That still leaves dog food.

But I think most Americans are really horrified by the idea of people slaughtering animals that have been pretty much "pets."

4. I know this won't be popular
but this just seems completely stupid to me. It just reeks of conservative ethnocentrism. Never will the legislature even consider doing this for any form of meat commonly consumed in the US. NEVER. This isn't a starting point or anything. Horses, cats, and dogs. That would be it. Because, the thinking of the average meat-eating American is that "those" cultures that eat what we consider to be pets are just stupid and wrong. Our society will NEVER turn that lens back on themselves and say "Hey, I just thought it was a great idea that we stopped killing horses for foreign consumption and now I don't see any reason to eat that cow." No. Instead, Joe Six-pack will be eating his juicy burger talking about how stupid it is for them damn gooks to eat dogs.

This is an ethnocentric conservative move and nothing more. They didn't outlaw the killing of the animals, just the consumption. So now those animals will be killed and disposed of rather than feeding people. Maybe they'll get rendered.

OK, I'll zip up my flame-retardant suit now. Fire away.
