| And now I have a vitamin question. |
|
There have been a few of these lately, huh?
So, my husband (age 38) has been riding to work on his bike every day. Great--it's wonderful for him and we've saved quite a lot in gas money. He rides about 25 miles a day.
So, here's the thing: I know for sure he gets one good meal a day (because I make it), and I kind of knew he that he eats badly when he's at work. I figured that meant he eats junk, but I found out what he actually does eat: nothing. Maybe a power bar or two.

Okay, so obviously I'm going to try to get him to take food with him, but I really want to get him started on some supplements right away. I'm afraid that all that biking and not enough food/vitamins/fuel is going to do a real number on him.
Anyone have any thoughts about this? He eats dairy & eggs (well, he would if HE ATE ANYTHING) and agrees that he needs some kind of supplements.
Help?

| 1. Vitamins aren't going to cut it. |
|
Hubbie needs to eat. Vitamins aren't calories. If he's not going to eat real food, consider meal replacement mixes. I'm thinking something like the EAS Myoplex packets. Pretty much a fully meal's worth of nutrition in an easy to carry (especially when biking) pouch. Last I can recall, the Deluxe is around $2.50 a packet. Not cheap, but better than eating crap for the same price.
For vitamins, to answer the direct question, I like Bluebonnet Super Earth Formula. Vegan and adds some ginseng and green superfoods to the usual "1 a day" mix. Also, a reminder to never take a vitamin on an empty stomach, and especially not on an empty stomach before biking home.

| 3. Yeah, I know it has to be both. |
|
In the past, he's been fine with eating stuff that I pack for him, but he won't do it himself. No idea why.
I'm pretty upset about the whole thing.
Thanks for your response.

| 2. He needs to eat something |
|
If he has that little interest in food a visit to the doctor is a good idea to rule out larger problems.

| 4. I'm going to try to enforce a packed lunch habit. |
|
Naturally, I'll be packing the lunch, but at least he'll eat what I make for him. We'll see if that takes, then go from there.
At least now I see why he's so ravenous every day when he gets home. Silly me.
Thanks for the input, LM.

There's a peanut butter & banana sandwich, fruit leather, granny smith apple, and chocolate cupcake ready to go for tomorrow.
Oh yes, it may be 'kid food,' but at least he'll eat.
I'm a lot less PO'd about it now, too. Thanks again for the encouragement.

| 6. Hey, kid food is good stuff. |
|
Make me some too :-)
All great choices. Highly portable. And bless you for caring so much about his health.

I do have lots more cupcakes, though!
Thanks, Ellen.

Just kidding. I don't like them, and it's kind of a running joke with me that as a vegan, one of nature's most perfect foods is simply intolerable.
Kid food is still good food. That's a good meal, there.

| 12. Peanut butter and yam for you, then. |
|
No?
How about peanut butter and mustard? (I actually ate these for a whole year in first grade. That's what happens when you have to make your own lunch when you're six!)
Thanks!

| 13. Would you believe he never ate yams until this easter? |
|
I made some and he liked them, but how freaking weird is it that he'd never tried them?
