| Stupidity kills me by degrees |
|
For those that don't know (and that's likely all of you), I work in a Room Service department of a major hotel in Milwaukee (3rd shift). I am completely vegan. Does this mean that I will not serve meat to someone who asks for it? No. I made my decision based on what was right for me. I do not force my viewpoint on others (at least at work). If someone asks me how something tastes I honestly tell them I don't eat meat and cannot give a recommendation.
OK, the groundwork is now laid for the story...
Last week I got a call from a woman and our conversation went something like this:
"Is the Caesar Salad vegetarian?"
"That depends on how you define vegetarian, ma'am."
Heavy sigh on the phone line. I continue.
"The salad does have egg and cheese in it, but it also contains anchovies in the dressing."
"Can you SEE the anchovies?"
"Well, ma'am, there are small bits that are in the dressing but I do not know if they are anchovies or something else."
Major annoyance fills her voice. Then she says...
"I don't care if they are in there as long as I can't see them!"
Soooo...apparently you can be vegetarian as long as you don't "see" the animal in the food?

| 1. If an anchovie falls in the dressing, but nobody is around to see it, |
|
is it still vegetarian?
That's a keeper, thanks for sharing.

my advice is simple: when someone asks if the caesar salad is vegetarian, just answer, "no."
It's true, it's quick, and if anyone challenges you, they're wrong to begin with.
So there.
(Too heavy-handed?)
Sorry to hear about the pseudo-vegetarians--they do make it hard on the rest of us, don't they?

| 3. I wonder if she was ordering for someone else. |
|
because of her apparent impatience and exasperation it seems like she just didn't care what was in the salad.
I was in the service/food sector for many years myself and it is very sad to watch the tremendous parade of people who could care less what they shove down their throats.

She was alone. And with her attitude I can understand why. :-)
