My neighbor with the iBook reports that when she prints multiple pages, the print on the first page comes out grey and the rest are black. Someone told her that it is a computer setting rather than a printer problem.
How can I help her?

| 1. nah, sounds like an ink problem |

some inkjet printers don't have black, but rather composite the other colors to make black. If one of the colors is running low or the head is dirty, it doesn't contribute to the blackness. Afer printing about a page the head gets ungunked or the ink starts flowing and you're back to black.

First and foremost:
What Operating System version is your neighbor is running?
What Printer is sHe using?
This problem sounds like the ink is out or the ink heads are clogged. Check to see if there is a Printer Utility for that printer.
The Printer Utility is located in the folder /Applications/Utilitys/Print Center (or Printer Setup Utility). Open Print Center, select the printer in question, select 'Utility' -> This launches a utility diagnosis program that configures the Printer. There should be a way to see if the printer is out of ink or clean the ink head.
Do this, it might work.

make sure that color or grey scale is selected on printer instead of "black only". I was going crazy with a similar problem until I remembered I had checked black only for a previous thing of printing out web pages that I didn't need the color for. I never thought it would affect a black or grey scale project. I only remembered that after several deep cleanings of the nozzle and wasting a lot of ink.
