My mail keeps crashing

I have a PowerMac G4 running OS 10.3.8. Every time I turn on the Mac and try to get my mail, it instantly crashes, not even opening up most times. If I then go back in, I often find a load of old deleted messages before the new stuff, or it won't bring in any new stuff until I try maybe 30 minutes later.
Safari also crashes sometimes.
I know almost nothing about Macs. I tried doing the disk first aid and verying permissions etc, bbut nothing seems to work.
Do any of you good people have any ideas what to do?

1. You may need to trash your Mail preferences

Whenever I have a problem, the first thing I do is restart my computer and repair the permissions. If that doesn't work, I use some kind of disk repair software like DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro 4. Then I start hitting the Macintosh forums like:

As far as Safari crashing, if it's only occasionally, I wouldn't worry too much. That's probably due to some javascript on the web page causing trouble.
