| Hello everyone, I am new to this DU group, but I am a Mac user from |
|
way back, my very first purchase was the Centris model back in the early 90's.
I have been using the iBook for a few years, right now I have 9.2 on it and it works wonderfully. I have given that laptop to my daughter to help her with her college work.
I have just bought myself the PowerBook G4 with 17 inch monitor and I have fallen in love with Apple all over again!!
I have a question for anyone who can help me out,
I am currently using my cable company's high-speed broadband connection for my G4 and my daughter is on dial-up. Will I be able to set up a wireless network for her iBook without using the Apple Airport Base? She likes the OS 9.2 and does not want me to upgrade her system to the OS X, can I set up this wireless network with any of the wireless routers that are sold at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc or does it have to be the Apple base station?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I am pretty sure that you can use other routers besides Airport. They may not work as well, but I can't say that for sure. I seem to recall people using other products because of the lower cost. The problem is that products that use OS 9.2 are no longer being developed. They're still out there, but they're becoming difficult to find. The software will become outdated, no drivers, etc.
The user interface for OS X does take a little getting used to after moving from 9.2. However, the most important aspect of OS X is what's happening under the hood. It is a rock solid operating system that is far better than 9.2 (or any other operating system) in its features and stability. If you can convince your daughter to migrate to OS X, she will eventually thank you for it.

I hope to find something this weekend and I hope to eventually upgrade the iBook's OS to the latest by the beginning of summer. That should make my daughter's on-line experience a whole lot better, she kicks me off my G4 when she needs something right away for her schooling and then I get stuck with the dial-up!
I have been going thru this forum and a lot of questions I have had about macs have been answered. There are a lot of smart people on this forum, but then we are Apple users so that is a given. :hi:

| 4. I'm using a D-link DI-624... |
|
....to network my new iMac G5 with a windows machine in the kitchen (it will be replace by the new mini when it arrives thursday) and a windose notebook in the family room.
Works fine with all or them and the imac recognized it right away. I was surprized how easy it was to set up the network under OS X, but then I'm used to window machines, and you know how clunky that can be.

I bought my daughter a new iBook, the 14 inch model along with Airport Extreme and I set up our wireless network in about 10 minutes.
Apple makes my life so easy, right now I am surfing the web at 6:30 am from the comfort of my warm bed, and my daughter just loves how she can go anywhere in the house and do her homework and get on-line.
Thanks again for all your input, MACS RULE!!
