| I love Macs, have never owned a PC, and yet.... |
|
I have a problem. All of the Real Estate MLS programs use a microsoft interface, even online. I've tried, and you cannot use it with Macintosh, no matter what OS you are using.
For example, Voyager, Paragon, Ambience.
This makes my life very complicated. Another problem is that the forms we use (formsrus.com) require the same Internet Explorer PC version browser.
What is with this??? Does anybody know of a solution?? I hate to think that to become road friendly i have to go out and buy a PC laptop.

| 1. Have you tried Virtual PC? |
|
This allows you to use most Windows software. Not very well, and you need a pretty fast computer, but it usually works. There are some programs where you just have to buy a PC, but at least it's something to look into: http://www.apple.com/macosx/applications/virtualpc/

I went out and bought the Virtual PC for my Mac, and the results were underwhelming. It crashed everytime I tried to use it. So I stopped trying.

| 7. You may have to buy a faster processor |
|
Virtual PC requires at least 700K.

And it has the 1.33 Ghz processor.
But now I think I know the problem. It is in repair. Logic board.

| 10. Whatever you do, don't run Windows XP |
|
It's awful under VPC. Use Windows 2000 instead. It requires far less memory, and if all you are using it for is web browsing, it more than covers your needs.

|
So, you are telling me that Windows 2000 in VPC is better. Wish I had known. Now what do I do?

Have you tried anything other than Safari? Firefox maybe?

| 4. I tried Internet Explorer. |
|
The programs won't work at all with Safari, and they try with Explorer, but can't get past the OS. I called their support people, and they were terse and unfriendly and said I needed to buy a PC.

My next move will be to sell the notebook and get an iBook. We will be a Windows free home. What a reliefe.

| 12. Let us know how it goes when your iMac G5 is up and running. |
|
Mine is great, though the fans make it a little noisier than the iLamp I was using. :)

| 13. The iMac is a pure pleasure. The fans are not totally quiet,.... |
|
....but quiet enough that they are lost in the ambient noise of my home office.
It takes so little desk space and the 20" screen has so much real estate that it's a sensory delight.
This is what computing should have been about from the start.
And the difference between Windows XP and OS X is like driving a Lexus after trading in the old 1983 Izusu diesel. Not even of the same species.

| 15. Ask the MLS provider for Remote Desktop access |
|
All they need to do is setup a user account on one of their Windows machines, and allow you to connect to it with the RDP client that MS makes for the Mac.
I think this type of solution is the most elegant.
