| 1. I don't know, but you can set Safari |
|
to prevent pop-ups, simply by checking "block pop-up windows" on the "Safari" menu.
If you're using IE, you're on your own. :-)

| 2. It's set to block pop-ups and has always worked in the past, but pop-ups |
|
or pop-unders have been getting through the last few weeks anyway. They are getting through firefox too.

I've gotten a bunch on ALL the browsers I've tried: Safari, Camino, Firefox, Omniweb...all getting popups where it didn't use to.

| 3. The firewall has nothing to do with pop-ups. |
|
The problem is advertisers have figured out ways of getting around the blockers. Only a matter of time until it is fixed though...

| 4. Safari, Netscape, and Mozilla |
|
all offer a popup blocking. Though recently some manage to pop behind regular windows - happen when I am on this site...
As for firewall - I have installed NetBarrier shortly after I purchased the G4 dual processor. Then last year we added a wi-fi router so that the iBook can use the cable modem and have had many problems and finally concluded that it was the firewall and I uninstalled it.

In Firefox (if you use it), go to "Preferences," then check off the box for Javascript. It instantly blocked the pop-unders I received from DU. I hope this helps.

| 11. Sorry, I meant "uncheck" Javascript |
|
I also have the "Java enabled" option unchecked as well, though I don't know if that helps it any more.
Sorry about the confusing wording in my earlier post.

| 9. You can use a Hosts file on your OS X system to block ALL ads |
|
If you are comfortable using the terminal and a handful of Unix commands, you can enable the Hosts file on your Mac and automatically strip out 99.99% of all ads. This will block pop-ups, pop-unders and banner ads. Details are here: http://www.macwrite.com/criticalmass/%20mac-os-x-hosts-panther.php

Living without any advertising would be a dream come true. Adding the hosts file almost makes that dream come true!

The Safari update in 10.3.9 has apparently taken care of the DU popunder that had been appearing with popup blocking enabled.
