How this happened, no one can tell me, but the palmrest plate is warped from the bottom of the machine, it's cracking the lucite case, and the screen is bent. It happened slowly, so I didn't notice until I ended up with a big crack in the palmrest.
Genius bar was no help, they accused me of banging it around (okay, even if I had, it has a vertical carry bag, and these cracks would have to be caused from a horizontal carry bag... and it's a $2k piece of hardware. I'm not about to abuse it!!)
So... tomorrow, I fight the Applecare phone line.
9 month old machine, and this happens. Grr.

I had it customized.
So basically, it came straight from the factory.

| 2. What's the state of the battery? |

I'm trying to remember the layout of the Macbook: isn't the battery under the palmrest? Apple has a problem with some Macbook and Macbook Pro batteries, and in some cases the battery can physically swell: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

Battery's under the palmrest, and yes, it gets hot. I've been checking it with a micrometer-calipers. So far, the battery is okay, but I'm suspecting the heat it generates is doing bad things to the plastic.
I live in a dry climate, so heat dissipation is fast, which means that things that are subjected to heat tend to warp.

Macbook got very hot and then the battery died. I suppose I should be thankful it died.
I have had 5 hardware problems with my Macbook in one year. 2 logic boards, 1 heatsink, 1 superdrive, and now the battery. I bought a Macbook Pro at the same time and have had the logic board replaced (solved the sudden shutdown prob) but none of the other problems. I wonder if there is a big quality difference between Macbook and the MacbookPro.

.......my second Mac.
Take the battery out immediately before it does more damage to your book and use the power cord until you replace or get replaced the battery.
