I'm making a ham-- any suggestions about side dishes? I'm thinking of some sort of sweet potato dish, and something green, along with a salad.

| 1. I'll probably talk to each one of them |
|
Since one will be in Japan and the other in Hawaii, that's what I'll do for them.

They get around, our kids.
If you're a parent, then you've probably had that moment when the thought passes through your mind that you're not raising kids, you're raising zucchini.
Ever since then - it involved a kid trying to sneak into her room by getting up on the roof, and then climbing down onto the sun porch that was off her room. She really didn't expect to find me up on the roof, waiting for her.
Rutabagas were smarter than our kids - on occasion.

I've got two, and the thought has not yet crossed my mind.
Monkeys, yes. Pigs, often. Sweet little pussycats, sometimes. Howling savage hyenas-- tonight.
But the vegetable kingdom? Nah.

I started a similar thread a few days ago. Especially since you are serving ham too, you might want to check out this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=236x14864 people made some great suggestions.

I'm late to the party-- will check it out.
On edit-- Looks good!
I am in a similar frame of mind. The house is filthy, I have to work all week, I haven't started food shopping yet, not one gift is wrapped, and, the crowning joy-- my daughter has head lice!
Easy, I want easy.. .

| 5. Guliver's Creamed Corn... |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 08:42 PM by housewolf
Tender little petite white kernals of corn, creamed with some real cream...
It's a holiday vegetable, not an every-day thing... sometimes it's more like dessert... Yummmmm!
Edited to add: So glad I responded to this thread before I read the "childhood food horrors" thread, only to see creamed corn as the #1 item over there... Not the same thing. No, not at all the same thing...

January birthday sufferer! Yes, I also think of Jan. 3 as the official end of the holiday season. And I wasn't even supposed to make my world debut until the beginning of February! I like to tell people that it's the only time in my life I've ever been early for anything. I just can't believe that this one will be my (gulp) 41st! Seems like yesterday that I was turning five and being serenaded at the local Big Boy restaurant, and the day after that that I was 19 and enjoying my first legal beer, and the day after that that I was 21.
I just moved to SD from OH this past summer, but I'll be home for my birthday, as I'm flying there tomorrow and not flying back until Jan. 4. So I'm bracing for yet another birthday dinner getting snowed out, lol. What are you doing for it this year?
My now-deceased grandma used to make a special birthday cake for all of us on our birthdays; it was chocolate and peanut butter, one of my favorites. When she died, no one could find the recipe she used; she'd probably been making it from memory for years. Sure wish I could find that, if anyone knows it, please let me know!

| 12. Oh lady, enjoy your youth! |

I am gonna be (BIG gulp) 54 this time. The birthdays keep coming faster and more furiously as time flies by. It was just a minute ago that I was 41. Remember, you will never be younger than you are right now!
I was supposed to be entering the world before Thanksgiving, so you see, I was always a late bloomer! Back then they didn't "induce"-- they just let you stay pregnant as long as you liked.
My big plan for the day is to take the day off work, go out to lunch with my husband and generally indulge myself after packing the kids off to school. And dinner out as well, definitely!
How are you liking SD and your new job? Must be a big change! Is it hard to meet new people? How is your son adjusting?

I keep it simple, I get that Costco Normandy frozen veggie blend. It's versatile.

| 15. I'd choose broccolini for the veggie. |
|
I brought it to a holiday dinner with friends, once, and it was a hit, even though these folks aren't big on any veggies, except the occasional corn or peas... And it's lighter and less labor intensive than broccoli, which happens to be my favorite, because it doesn't require all the peeling that broccoli does. I've found it in the produce section of my local chain supermarkets and prepare it simply, just steaming it in the microwave in a little salted water, and serve it with a little butter.:9
I'm planning to make ham, as well, and just posted a thread asking for advice, since I've never made this before. How do you do yours? The one I have is fully cooked, boneless and five pounds. I've searched for how long in the oven and at what temperature, but I guess that this is a no-brainer for everyone but me. Thanks, bon appetit and Merry Christmas! Sounds like a Christmas feast!:hi:
