I finally decided this morning to use my old fashioned donut maker. First the batter was too thick and they tasted good but didn't look like donuts. While I was trying to work things out, Bill took out the powdered sugar and sprinkled it all over the first ones with his hand getting it all over the place, including the paper towel I was draining them on. :eyes:
I had to scoop the batter back out of the donut maker and add some more milk. Washed the donut maker and reassembled and refilled. That was the right consistency but they turned out too big and didn't get completely done inside so I had to refry them a little, which made them a tad overdone as it was really hard to keep the non-hydrogenated shortening at an even temp in the cast iron skillet.
Oh, well...that was the first try and I learned things. Will go better the next time.
Please don't suggest a get a deep fryer coz it ain't happening. I don't want another appliance and really want to learn to do this the way it's been done without them. :hi:

I congratulate you for your efforts! Last year when I made them I used a cast iron dutch oven and had the same problem with done-ness and oil temp. And lordy the house smelled like fry for days.
Are you using a batter?

I used one of the batter recipes on the side of the box for sour cream donuts. It was really too thick and wouldn't come out. But I'll definitely know how to do it next time, although I don't know when that will be. LOL I didn't melt a whole lot of shortening, just about half an inch, which was plenty really. No lingering smell, luckily enough.
How's your day been?

I did make a really good salad and those chocolate caramel crackers to take to my SIL's. They were a big hit.
Hope you are having a good day, too. :hi:

but I rarely have leftover mashed taters. If I make them there's usually enough for two dinners with whatever entree and then they're gone. LOL

| 6. What did they look like when they didn't look like donuts? |
|
When I was a teenager, it took me a long time to make pancakes that looked like pancakes and not cats & dogs.
Well, you're very courageous for trying this on a holiday. The last time I tried to make donuts was the last time I tried to make donuts.

This has led to serious accidents with the whole horn family, a couple of men, and every kind of sugar.
You, on the other hand, are a champ. Those donuts better figure out who fries their behinds, pronto.

prolly what Grandma used to call "larrupin'." Can't go wrong unless you start with crap and I know you never do that. Heard it was looking like rain down your way this morning. For a change, we had bright sunshine today altho' the breeze was coolish. Have a sweet evening! :loveya:

It's been overcast and muggy all day. Supposed to be the same tomorrow with thunderstorms starting in the evening. The fun's just starting down here. :eyes:
I tend to enjoy this time of year because it can be sunny and warm during the day and slightly chilly at night. Good sleeping with the windows open and blankies on. Oh, and a warm hubband and a couple of kitties all piled on top, too.
Glad you are having lovely weather. Can you explain that larrupin' thing to me? LOL :hi:

yes, I remember it well. Soak up that good sleeping weather now while you can. Larrupin', I think, refers to the slurping sound that happens when you eat too fast. I'm flying by the seat of my pants here on the definition, but when grandma said it we knew she meant "soooo goooood!"
