I have created two foodie nightmares
I have two grandsons; 5 and 10. The ten year old asks if I have any gravlox. "Yes, slice yourself some."

The five year old says, "Okay, I'll get the cream cheese and caviar . . ."

1. Nice!
That just proves that you are never too young to appreciate "yummy"

2. It beats the hell out of the foodie nightmares 1950s parents tried to create
Cooking out of Lilek's Gallery of Regrettable Food should have produced the absolute nadir of American culinary standards and nutrition, yet it produced the core group of the food renaissance in this country. Translation: we all learned how to cook out of sheer self defense since our childhoods had been scarred by so many bad casseroles that were stuffed with as many processed foods as possible.

Of course, given any new generation's talent for rebellion, these kids might opt for the culinary experience outlined in "Repo Man," cans of black and white generic labels that said only "FOOD."

4. They are NOT the nightmares.
The real nightmares are the ones who only eat pizza, chicken nuggets and Lunchables. From what I understand (I don't have kids), there are lots like that out there. Their parents are either too busy, or they don't know how, or they just plain can't be bothered to make them real food. So they are raised on crap, and consequently, that's all they want. It does my heart good to hear stories about youngsters who like "exotic" things like gravlax and caviar. I can understand not liking something, but I have no tolerance for people who refuse to even try something. I don't care how young they are. Good for you, and good for your grandsons' parents for raising foodies. Better that than being too afraid to try something new and different.
