I'm looking for funny recipes!!
Edited on Sat May-07-11 08:40 PM by Sparkly
I've been looking around the "internets," but realized I should ask all of you this!!

I'm looking for pre-1965 recipes that are kitschy and then some... Things you might actually eat, but are somehow funny -- especially if they make something that's meant to LOOK decorative, like that "Bunny Salad" that uses pear halves and sticks things in them to look like bunnies (I think they look like mice, but whatever).

If you can't think of something, please consider making one up!! Is there something fun you could do to decorate a dip using olive slices and other things? Could you make a park scene on something using parsley and whatever? Anything really silly or over-the-top would be great!!

(Yes, this is a project inspired by those cookbooks!!)

Thanks in advance!! :hi:

(Edit -- if you have a unique family recipe of some kind, please share that too!)

(Edit again: For example, check out these Spring Flowerpot Salads!!http://thriftshopromantic.blogspot.com/2008/06/whatever-happened-to-baby-greens-or.html (Anybody have this cookbook by any chance?)

1. Have you ever had Dirt Pudding?
(My kids found this pretty funny when they were little)

Dirt Pudding Cups

"At birthday parties, everyone loves the individual servings because each person gets a gummy worm,"

2 cups cold milk
1 package (1.4 ounces)instant chocolate pudding mix
1 carton (8 ounces) whipped topping
1 package (16 ounces) Oreos, crushed
Gummy worms not optional

In a bowl, whisk milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Fold in whipped topping. Divide a third of the cookie crumbs and half of the pudding mixture among 10 dessert cups; repeat layers. Top with remaining crumbs. Garnish with gummy worms if desired. Yield: 10 servings.

2. There are all kinds of cakes with weird ingredients
Edited on Sat May-07-11 11:22 PM by The empressof all
I have personally made and enjoyed

Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake
Tomato Soup Cake and
Green Tomato Cake.

I most recently made Green tomato cake and got the recipe on line. I also made some Green tomato mincemeat which made a lovely pie and yummy cookies.

I have also made that bunny cake that you make with two round cakes.

I have also made witches hats for Halloween with ice cream cones turned on top of round cookies then iced with chocolate frosting and decorated with orange piping. You can also dip them in chocolate. They can be filled with candy as a nifty Halloween treat. Lots of work but memorable.

They don't make the chocolate cones anymore. (or at least they aren't out here by me)

4. I can't find a picture, but I've seen a Porcupine Pear salad that is similar
to the bunny salad, but they used slivered almonds stuck in the pear half for the quills.

Of course, you could always make marshmallow flowers to decorate cupcakes.

7. It doesn't look funny but Frog Eye Salad always seemed funny and it tastes good
Maybe if you're lucky you can find some green frog peeps to put at the edge of the bowl.

A decade with even worse taste in food than the '60s.

I remember visiting this website before; it's pretty funny. Looks like there are some funny links at the bottom of the page too.

11. The Link I Just Posted
had a link to this fellow's website. I remember seeing both of these websites some years back but I don't remember how I heard about them. His book looks pretty funny. Actually, come to think about it sometimes I see things in current magazines or cookbooks that I wouldn't dream of making either because they look unappetizing or weird or they would be too artery-clogging. Maybe I'll start collecting these too...

12. HaHa!
This would be a good assignment for one of those cooking programs. To have to take one of those recipes but update it and make it look good and appetizing too. Maybe let them have a little leeway, if they want they can eliminate one ingredient and/or add one or not.
