Juicer recommendations

I got a cheap juicer, and it didn't work worth a damn. I was trying carrots and wheat grass through it, and it failed. It's your typical Ronco type product.

I'd like a recommendation for an affordable juicer - manual or electric. I don't mind if it is manual. I have half a crop of wheat grass sitting there and all of the juice from the parts I did put through it just leaked on the floor.

1. I've been looking for a new juicer too

I have an ancient (70s vintage) centrifugal juicer; so old that no pictures exist on the internet. It's sort of like this one, but 40 years older.


From what I read, it seems the masticating juicers are far superior to the centrifugal types - they look and operate a bit like a meat grinder - but a good one is hideously expensive - over $400.

I'll be sticking with my old one which actually has a very powerful motor and is probably more solidly built than similar but newer models.

6. I've had good luck with a Juiceman Jr.

For a cheapo model ($50 - $70 most stores), it works well. I've had mine about 8-10 years, and it's had some pretty hard workouts during harvest season. I've made gallons of tomato juice, apple cider, etc.

My only real complaint about it is that the chute is fairly narrow, so most regular sized apples, pears, tomatoes need to be cut into smaller pieces first. Maybe they've changed it since I bought mine.

3. I borrowed an older Oster juicer from my neighbor and it works really well

I can even do greens with it, in between batches of something harder like carrots.

This one is an old enough version that I can't find a pic of it. But as far as more economical juicers go, when I get ready to buy my own, I'll check reviews for Oster at Amazon first, if I cannot afford the Vitamix by that time...

5. I have a Breville Juice Fountain Plus

I've done pretty good with it with regular veggies and fruit: tomatoes, squashes, apples, celery, turnips, kiwis, all good stuff. Anything with a shape. Good output and the pulp goes in the garden.

It doesn't do so nice with leafy veggies like kale or wheatgrass. They tend to just go right through un juiced. But I did have slightly better luck steaming them a bit first. I think for the leafy veggies, the slow grinding ones are probably better, but they are more expensive, in the $4-500 range. We found this one for less than 200 on ebay.
