| Mandrakelinux 10.2: Imminent Release |
|
Just a little heads-up to you people who are thinking of switching to Linux or going dual-boot: Mandrakelinux 10.2 is soon to be released. Apparently, there is already a "freeze" on the main directory in the "cooker"(development) file repository on the FTP mirrors. As a long time Mandrake user and cooker watcher, I can tell you that is a sign that they are making the ISOs for download.
All indications are that this will be a very solid release version. .2 Mandrakelinux releases usually are best-of-breed. Also, for the n00bish amongst us, Mandrakelinux is well-known as an easy-to-setup distro for your first time into the Linux pool.
It also looks like the x86-64(Athlon 64-bit processors) version will be released in sync with the 32-bit version. At least, that is what all the indications are.
Once again, for the new adoptors of Linux: I have setup quite a few of the Linux distros. Mandrakelinus is EASY-PEASY to setup. Does this mean you have to stay with it in perpetuity and make burnt sacrifices to it? No. It is a good solid distro that is a great starting point on your Linux odyssey. Another distro, down the road, may well-prove to be the *nix bliss you seek. That said, you gotta start somewhere. This is a good start.
