how do you know its bad? And how do you know it is specific to .net? If yes to both then it is a simple matter of copying the "good" dll and registering it. regsvr32 "name of .dll" But then i guess the question is how do you get the dll with out having the source? You can try to download it from some website but i think that is a risk. If you have the correct version of the install package try Universal Extractor. it will extract the .net package and you should be able to get the dll

| 3. As someone with a LOT of experience with .NET |

you'd be better off completely uninstalling .NET, then reinstalling it. If your still using .NET 1.1, you should probably also install .NET 2.0. Versions 3.0 and 3.5 are also available, but you probably don't need them.
Here's a link to the .NET 1.1 download page; it also has links to the downloads for versions 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. Here are the steps that will give you the best results:
1. Download the packages you want to install (1.1 and 2.0 at a minimum) 2. In Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Control Panel->Programs and Features, find and uninstall any versions of the .NET framework that are installed. If you have more than one, uninstall the newest ones first. 3. Restart your computer 4. Install each package in order (1.1 first, 2.0 second, etc.) 5. Restart your computer again and force it check for updates
