Any good recommendations for organizing a digital photo library?

Here's my problem, I've got about 15gb of pictures scattered across my removable hard drive, and I'd like to organize them, but I have no idea where to start other than just picking a folder and going at it pic by pic. Does a program exist that will organize them for you by date? How do the professionals do it?
