Trying to install iTunes -- AVG is flashing trojan warnings.

Downloaded the iTunes install file directly from Apple, and AVG won't let
me install it because of "trojans."

Who do I believe? Do I turn off AVG while installing.

I bought an iPod and the only software that works with the iPod is iTunes.
I may take it back if I can't get this to work.

The directions for installing a lot of software indicates you should disable your anti-virus software before doing so.

This of course beg several questions. What real use is anti-virus software? What is all this software doing that it tracks as a trojan or virus via a heuristic analysis sweep?

Chances are you're getting a so-called "false positive" on this. iTunes has a lot of little bits with it that do in fact act like a Trojan would.

P.S. You don't have to have iTunes to use your iPod.

There are actually lots of apps that will do this. My experience is primarily with Linux, but Songbird is cross-platform.

You won't be able to use their DRM-infected store, but you can get unencumbered music in dozens of other places and use them on your iPod using something like this.

I'm not up on Apple products, and you may have a more recent one that has been engineered so as not to work as well with third-party apps. Certainly they don't want you to use third-party apps, but the apps come. It just takes awhile with each new iteration.

Sorry that didn't work. I recommended it because my daughter uses it. Someone got her an iPod as a gift awhile back, and we went looking for something that would work other than iTunes. Songbird did well.

As for ripping, you could use a number of applications that rip and convert to/save in mp3 format, then just copy those over.

I took it back. The sales guy couldn't find any music on it either.

But the girl at the customer service desk recommended an mp3 player
called Creative Zen, said it didn't need an interface on the computer,
which suits me just fine.

Anyway, I think you made the right decision.

I've never caught the Apple bug. Obviously (sig) I'm not a big fan of DRM-ed music, and there are now many legitimate ways to purchase DRM-free files and store them on a player that doesn't try to lock you in to a specific service.

You don't give yourself enough credit. Songbird worked, installed, didn't give me Trojan warnings while it installed. That was a big part of what I was looking for.

You can't help it if I'm a complete Luddite when it comes to some of these technologies.

Any mp3 player will play music without any of the DRM and iTunes proprietary crap-and costs a hell of a lot less.
I've got 4 different mp3 players ranging from 512Mb to 4 Gb in size. They play mp3, wav and even wma without a glitch. The most expensive one cost me $20

There's a story on Slashdot about it, based on discussion from the Apple forums.

AVG reportedly as fixed the issue so that iTunes files are no longer flagged as a trojan.
