I can go to some sites, but not on others...

Earlier tonight everything worked fine, then suddenly I couldn't get on yahoo. I tried a few other sites with mixed results. I cannot get onto Huffington Post, but I can get on C&L. I don't get it. :shrug:

I called my ISP and they said there was some major fiber optic outage or something, but it had been fixed. I tried resetting my router and deleted my cookies. I also unplugged the router and went directly through the modem. Nothing has worked so I can get back on my regular sites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

on edit: I get a message saying that IE cannot display the web page at these sites. It just occured to me to try a different browser.

on edit: I just tried using Firefox and it made no difference. Still can't get to some sites. I miss HuffPo :(

1. Sounds like it could be a DNS cache issue?

Maybe call your ISP back and ask them to walk you through the DNS settings?

I'm getting on the phone with my ISP later on. Hopefully, this can be fixed. It's getting aggravating. Whenever I google, I can't get into a lot of sites. At least half just go to that dreaded "can't be displayed" message.

Have you done a scan with antivirus, and Malwarebytes?

That IP I posted should go directly to HuffingtonPost.com, so your browser seems to be getting hijacked.

6. Called my ISP again...

turns out they were having huge numbers of customers with DNS issues. Problem has finally been resolved. Thanks for the help!

7. Sounds like the DNS server of your ISP had been hacked

since many customers were having the same problem. All that means is that the database that your ISP maintains of DNS data (ie, which domain names map to which IP addresses) got some bad info so that when you typed in certain domain names, they now got mapped to the wrong IP.

I suppose from a hacker's perspective that's one way to move a lot of traffic in one fell swoop. Until the ISP notices, that is.
