| Cursing Dell under my breath! Frickin machine manual wasn't accurate! |
|
Old machine had 450 mhz processor. Manual clearly sez SECC2. Read everybody's online advice about upgrading. Find a cheap faster Slot 1 SECC2 processor. Open the case. Start to pull out the old processor. Frickin thing is Slot 1 but it isn't SECC2. Cuss. New processor slides in the slot okay, but there's nothing obvious to keep it from falling back out. Go buy nylon cable ties. Jerry-rig a system of cable ties to keep the processor from sliding back out of the slot. Cuss some more. Close the case. Works fine. Hope I've correctly thought through the cable tie lay-out

Glad it's working. You're very funny. Thank you. :)
My Dell threw a "virtual memory is too low" message at me this morning, have a feeling I'll be cussing pretty soon, too.

| 2. It's probably easy to add memory. Dell misled me when I bought more memory for my old Dimension, |
|
which had only three memory slots: Dell claimed that the memory needed to be installed in matched pairs, which would have been true for a newer machine but actually wasn't true for that old clunker
You can probably find the manual online and so learn how to crack open the case and drop in some extra memory if you need it. There may be some oddities: the manual for a later Dell of mine says that it is important to not to discard the original memory cards for that machine

| 3. I think virtual memory is an easy setting to change. |
|
I'm just waiting for the goddamn message to show up again so I can write it down word-for-word and then find the instructions for what to do to fix it. Of course, said message is hiding, afraid of the whack-a-mole.
I bought this computer because Vista had just come out and this computer had XP on it. I think next go-round I may go for something I really want instead of something I felt lucky to get.
Hope you're not still cussing. I laughed so hard when I read your post. Sorry. :)

| 5. You have some kind of a unique tech thing going. |
|
It's like all of us who know a little bit who try to take care of this shit ourselves and we're all like knowing the nerd heads from high school are fucking with us.
It'd be a great cable show. :)

| 7. Oh, come on. That's a great pitch! |

If you've been doing this for as long as I've been doing this, there's millions of us who would be attracted to I cussed this, then I cussed that, then I thought I had it fixed, then I cussed some more.
It's beautiful.

| 8. Are you thinking "Hints from Heloise" or "Click-n-Clack"? |
|
"Repair Vista files easily with duct tape and bailing wire"?
-or-
"I was packing for our ski trip and I put my girl friend's laptop down on the driveway behind the car. But then I completely forgot about and backed over it. Is this really my fault? I'm trying to decide whether to buy her a new laptop or just to look for a new girlfriend"?
