Welcome to DU! :hi:
This is from the community forum:
Try this for a manual update, go to your Antivir folder in programs and look for the file Preupd, and click or double click it. If this works have a look for that file again.
Let us know.

AntiVir Help (been there) AntiVir on the Internet Start AntiVir.
I'm wondering if I should un-install and re-install this? Might be easier than messing with everything.
Do you prefer AVG or AntiVir Windows XP IE7
Thanks

For awhile about 4 months ago? AVG was having constant issues with updating for everyone. And when I had Norton twice a year their Live Update would stop working. Perhaps the AV company you use is having issues. If you know anyone else with it, ask them if they are having updating issues also.

| 4. Sorry I didn't get back this morning........ |

I had some trouble loading their site this morning. They could have been having some server issues. I'm curious why it says "Start AntiVir", if it is running.
When I supported Microsoft products, uninstall/reinstall was one of our standard protocols  So, there is always that option. Another was TAL (try again later).
I can't recommend any of the free anti-virus programs at this time. I hate them all, and don't use any of them. But I can't recommend others go without protection. I have the trial version of Kaspersky downloaded to try out. I've become willing to PAY for an AV, if I'm going to use one. Of the two you mention, Avira is probably the least troublesome.
Try stopping the program and starting it again. Do you leave the pc on overnight? If you didn't boot fresh this morning, just do so, reboot, and see if an update runs.

AntiVir then went back and activated it. Their Status screen now shows that today's update was done. Strange! If this happens again, I might un-install and re-install it.
I turn the computer off each evening and flip the power bar switch too. No use running these electric goodies when I'm not using them. I do the same with the TV,DVD/VCR and the radio so that between both power switches, I'm not paying for 24 hour a day electricity for a combined 7 energy using units. I am under the impression that all these electronic gizmo's are on all the time, whether they are being used or not.
Thanks for your help, it worked.

require reinstall. There might just be a start up routine that is interfering with it launching normally. Or it could have been a one time failure.
Glad it's *normal* for now. :hi:
