Somehow, I bolloxed up an OpenOffice installation.

I downloaded OpenOffice.org 3.1 and attempted to install it. It did not go well. I decided to uninstall it and start fresh, so I run Revo Uninstaller and CCleaner.

Everything seemed to be going well, then I get a message that I need to exit OpenOffice.org 3.1 and the OpenOffice.org 3.1 Quickstarter beefore I can continue (I'm not on a multi-user system).

I go searching for anything OpenOffice left on the computer and I notice that there is still an OpenOffice 3 folder under Program Files. Should I delete this folder before I try to download OpenOffice 3.1 again?

I don't know what the hell I have done. I have a feeling this is a Vista issue. But then again, I hate Vista. :(

1. Try using the tools option of ccleaner, If it is still in the uninstall list.

Highlight in list and select run uninstaller on the right. If not manually remove folder.

in the Task Manager. Sounds like weird stuff.

3. Oh! That's a whole 'nother problem I was going to post about.

One day, I got a pop-up message from Avast! that they now had a blog. I tried to click on the link to check it out, and my computer froze.

I tried to do a ctrl-alt-delete, and that didn't help. So I just turned the computer off.

When I rebooted, there was a message about Task Manager not being able to respond and needs to shut down. Then, I get a message about Data Execution Prevention (DEP). I copied the message and pasted it in . . . OpenOffice Writer! And I can't access that right now. x(

Did I mention that I don't like Vista?

to run the Windows tool. (complete scan) There is a link on this page to use it with Vista:

Allow 3-5 hours. It will repair your registry and clean any remaining malware buggers. In case you haven't heard; it fixed a long standing systray error caused by AVG.

Shut it down. I can't recommend getting rid of it because I have nothing to suggest to replace it. The Windows scan is so important, though, I would suggest you even resort to uninstalling AVG and then reinstalling it.

8. Oh, the Windows scan was completed, it just didn't fix the problem.

I uninstalled Avast!, though, and reinstalled an older version of OpenOffice.

I still don't know what to do about the message regarding the Task Manager. Do you suggest taking it to a Vista forum?

Avast AND AVG? You are only supposed to run one anti-virus at a time. You can keep other malware removers which don't run in the background. But, only one active AV.

It won't hurt to take it to a Vista forum, of course. Did the Windows scan fix any registry items?

There's a lot of gaps of information here, some assumptions being made I think may be wrong, and a conflating of two issue into one.

What was "not going well" about the install of Open Office? When you began the install, did you do so by running the installer program "as an administrator"? You said you went about uninstalling it because of things not going well, which would seem to indicate it did in fact get installed.

So, basically, describe the problem please.

As for the use of Revo and CCleaner, in what order did you run these, and did either of them complete?

The issue you initially described sounds to me simply like you had OO running, shut it down, but left the Quickstarter running. This is installed, starts by default, and does not shut down unless you explicitly shut it down. Revo or CC (whichever one gave you the problem) was probably trying to delete something that couldn't be deleted with that program running, so it told you to close it. It could have been in memory either because you didn't close it or because it was "stuck" for some reason.

The folder you found lingering is evidence to this. The standard uninstaller for most software doesn't actually delete the folders associated with it. What Revo does *first* is use any built-in uninstaller apps. That part could well have succeeded without the so-called "deep scan" stuff it does to remove things like folders, registry entries, etc.

As for the other, separate issue you were having, were you running AVG *and* Avast at the same time? I didn't get that impression initially, but now I'm confused.

I don't use OO, and only intended to mention a possible situation wherein an application closes but leaves its process running. The AVG/Avast situation failed to register until a few posts later.

12. I don't remember what wasn't going well with respect to the

OpenOffice installation. All that I remember was that toward the end of the installation, a message popped up and it couldn't complete. I didn't note the message. And I did not run the installer program as an administrator.

For the uninstall, I first ran Revo, then followed up with CCleaner. They both completed. I also ran Malwarebytes, and there was a trojan.

And I was confused because Why Syzygy first mentioned AVG in post #4. I was running Avast, not AVG.

However, since I did manage to successfully re-install OpenOffice 3.0, I am now more concerned about the Task Scheduler Engine has stopped working message that appears every time I start up. Should I post this issue as an original post? Or, if there are not enough Vista people here, should I post it in a Vista forum?

I'm probably only slightly smarter than the average goober when it comes to computers. Since you mentioned AVG after I mentioned Avast, I was assuming that "AVG" was perhaps a parent company to "Avast." I was also assuming that "Task Manager" and "Task Scheduler" were interchangeable terms. :blush:
