I HATE Vibrant In-Text Advertising!
http://www.vibrantmedia.com/

These are the blood-suckers that launch a 'butterfly' when you mouse over underlined words in articles while browsing. Has to be a tool someone can make to squash these bugs.

1. Do you use a script blocker? (assuming that's a script)
I recovered my sanity after installing No Script and Flash Block for Firefox. Now *I* get to decide when and if scripts and/or flash run.

Course, if it's not done via a script or flash, then I'll probably soon hate it too.

2. I use IE7 because of work, always testing apps and websites
So I can log in and block them at the web server if there is a problem so the work monkeys don't destroy the network.

3. NoScript
if you're using Firefox, something comparable in other browsers. Or disable Javascript entirely in Opera, IE, and Firefox, and set exceptions for the sites you want to allow. A Flash blocker would work too -- you'd still get popups, but they'd be contentless.

4. Yeah, and they are all over.

Sometimes I can barely read a blog or news story for all the "butterflys" (didn't know they were called that). I will sometimes even avoid reading a page covered with those links. It drives people away. Some 'advertising'. :eyes:

5. You can put the script hosting sites in your restricted sites list...
Click on "TOOLS" -> "INTERNET OPTIONS," then "SECURITY" tab.
Select the "RESTRICTED SITES" icon. Click on "SITES".

Add the following to your "Restricted Sites" list...
*.vibrantmedia.com
*.intellitxt.com
*.kontera.com

Refresh the page and they should be gone forever, without having to install any additional software.

6.  They are wise to it, so the addresses change all the time
and some site they link to that I need at work (GM for example) I can't block (sigh). I blocked them long ago but couple of butterflies popped up last night and hidden in the source was vibrantmedia. Bastards.

7. Yeah, I've gotten very careful about where I put my cursor
because I can't stand those things.

Hyperlinks were fine. You had to click on them to make them work. Those damned popup things block the text and screw up your reading and I wish they'd go the hell away.

If anybody figures out how to get rid of them, let me know.

9. Firefox with NoScript?

I've seen them, at work, using IE. This is the reason I bring a USB with Firefox loaded as a portable app ... well, one of the reasons.

10. I looked and yes, I had blocked the sites in ChromeFoundry's post.
I must have done it proactively some time ago and forgotten. I don't visit many sites that use them either.

And no, it seems not good enough anymore... as DainBramaged points out.

:(

Nevertheless it was with some satisfaction I tried to go to the vibrant media website and came up with nothing...

http://www.vibrantmedia.com is dead to me.

While digging further I found this gem:

The blight known as Vibrant Media

Sorry publishers, but a sure sign that you suck is when you start running those deceptive double-underlined Vibrant Media/IntelliText ads on your articles. Forbes.com had the wisdom to crush these long ago (after an tribute to slain Moscow bureau chief Paul Klebnikov carried a double underlined link to a life insurance advertiser). I just went to PC Magazine to read a perfectly decently article about PC vendors and crapware/bloatware, and lo, hover over the wrong thing and this black hole sort of appears (like the second coming of the popup from hell) and obscures the text. Do I really need to see the word “laptop” emphasized and see this black chasm until the unit renders?
