| Every time I turn my computer on it wants to download Windows Update KB967715 |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 09:15 AM by NNN0LHI
Even if I download it (which I have done a number of times) and it tells me it was downloaded successfully I'll be damned if next time I reboot my computer it puts a little yellow shield shaped icon in my tray and it wants me to download it again.
Any ideas how I can get this machine to stop doing this? Its driving me nuts.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows Update KB967715 is a 'fix' to prevent autorun of a flash drive when plugged into your computer. All of a sudden the good folk at Microsoft have realised that with the proliferation of viruses on usb drives, the three nanoseconds saved by having everything run automatically may not necessarily be a good thing for the health of your computer.
You could do as I do; right click My Computer/Properties/Automatic Updates and turn the bloody thing off and then periodically check for necessary patches and security fixes.
Or you could follow these steps:
1. Control panel/add remove programs - remove update KB967715 2. Go to Microsoft site, download another copy manually and save it somewhere accessible 3. Reboot into safe mode; tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot, until you see the safe mode screen then use the enter and arrow keys to boot your computer 4. Install KB967715 by double clicking in usual way. 5. Reboot.
With luck, this will solve your problem.

The first fix is just as aggravating as being prompted to reload the program all the time. Now it keeps prompting me that my "computer is at risk", because the AU feature is turned off.
I would like to try the second fix but where would the copy be stored where it will still be accessible in Safe Mode if you don't mind me asking? I usually put this kind of stuff on my desktop but it doesn't show up there in Safe Mode.
Any ideas where I can store it and still access it in Safe Mode?
Again thanks in advance.

and call it Downloads. Put it somewhere easily accessible ie. in My Documents or even directly into the C drive so that it shows up along with Program Files, Windows etc.
If you use Firefox browser, open Tools/options. On the Main tab there is an option to select where all downloads go automatically.
If you are using IE, you may have to go to the Microsoft update page, find the one you want then RIGHT click the link and select 'Save Target As...'. That will give you a dialogue box where you can navigate to your new downloads folder.

| 5. After I got into Safe Mode I went to the Search function in the start menu and found it there |

I ran the update from there and my computer loaded it correctly and now everything is hunky dory here. My machine seems to be running a lot smoother now. Thanks again for your help.

Don, you would be amazed at how much Windows crap you can turn off and still have a safe and functioning computer. I was, halfway through this thread, going to suggest that you go into Admin Tools/services and turn the bloody security centre off and give yourself the peaceful life that you deserve!
I'll let you into a secret. After much consideration, I decided to ditch a permanently running antivirus program. Asking myself, 'How long have you been on the net?' - close on twenty years. How many viruses have I caught from opening bad attachments? None - because I'm not blessed with the natural inquisitivness that requires me to attend to every bit of spam and unknown crap that arrives in my inbox.'
My computing habits and cautions do not put me at risk of executing a virus, thus I resent the disk space and memory useage that these increasingly cumbersome programs demand.
I've invested thirty or so bucks in the paid version of Malwarebytes, so that I can have it scan my computer every night during the hour or so between 1 and 2am that I'm not using it. I use ClamWin, an on-demand virus scanner for anything I download or feel is suspect. I always turn off autorun, uPnP, auto updates; in other words, I don't allow anything to happen on my computer of which I am not completely aware and/or have authorised. Mate, the computer has never run better. Take the plunge, you may like it, all it needs is a little vigilance on your part

Since my fresh install in July, I've been running w/o resident AV. I tried many of them, and found them all too intrusive; one even hindering my game start. I installed AVG a couple of weeks ago because I noticed a weird pop-up during a free program download. Scanned clean. I found, though, that I could not completely turn off the AVG processes so I could just use it on demand. So I uninstalled it. I scan my registry almost daily. I figure, too, if a virus gets onboard, there would be weird registry entries. I'm going to look at ClamWin. (open source  ) Do you have to install it to use it on-demand?

But there is a ClamWin folder in Program Files and there is an unins.exe, so I must have installed it! You can have it running in the SysTray or not, and it adds a context menu entry 'Scan with ClamWin'.
Remember that ClamWin does not actually clean any virus it finds, you would have to look it up and do it manually, or, I guess, temporarily install a mainstream AV.
