5. Free GIMP tutorial PDFs

We're giving you the high-res PDFs - the same ones we use to actually print the pages of the magazine - which means they'll look awesome on your screen, or printed out. The down-side of this is that the files are quite big - the total download is 90MB - and that means you'll need BitTorrent.

You're free to use these tutorials for personal use or for non-commercial offline redistribution - ie, you can give them away at your LUG, share them with colleagues at your office, or burn them to a CD as a backup. Please don't put them online; if someone else wants to download them, direct them to this URL.

At this time we're only using BitTorrent for the files, because we don't want our server weighed down by too much traffic. We're aware that some people can't seem to get BitTorrent working, so after the initial rush we will add a direct download.

3. I really like GIMP ...

When I first started using it, I thought of it as an alternative to Photoshop. Now I sorta think the other way around.

I haven't actually used Photoshop in years, but I sat at a computer the other day at work that had it, and I fired it up to play with it. I'm sure it's more powerful in some ways, but since I'm accustomed to GIMP, I just found it clunky.

I do all my digital art with the GIMP.

Photoshop is like a big expensive motorhome with a car in tow behind it. You've got a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom, and five clean suits in the closet that you wear to meetings with clients.

GIMP is like a motorcycle. It's you and the road.

8. When Apple went to Leopard, it broke PS7. I had to go with GIMP. I used to

use it back in my Linux days, so it wasn't too hard to pick it back up again. It's really nice. Much more powerful than it was earlier this century. The photos in my sig line were run through GIMP.
I've made it my default editor in iPhoto.
