I have generally ignored the "update available" notices for quite some time. I looked the other day and the list is quite long. Should I be installing these and are there specific ones that are more needed than others.

the updates that are rated important or critical....if you have a question about a specific update, just do a search to see if it's causing any problems.

Install everything except for optional hardware and "live" updates.
Most of the fixes are for security vulnerabilities. If you don't install them, you are open for attack.
