Anybody else have the HP C4480 printer "unresponsive" problem?

Anybody else have the HP C4480 printer "unresponsive" problem?
The Photosmart C4480 is known to become "unresponsive" under some circumstances; HP issued a firmware update for this problem, which I applied last summer. About a week ago, the printer fell into an "unresponsive" state, and the standard fix (unplug everything for a while and try again) doesn't work

18 months from purchase to brick seems unacceptably short to me

Ideas?
