There are many programs that install stuff like this without the user realising it; MS Office pops itself into the startup folder, so does Acrobat reader, to name a couple.
I have a couple of problems with this. Logically, how many things can you have humming away, unused in the background before your computer performance starts to suffer? In practical terms, the time saved by having all these quick starts amounts to about a poofteenth of a second.

| 4. If you use Windows XP you may need this addon for Java apps to run |
|
correctly in Firefox. My Vista machine doesn't have it, but my XP machine does.
Java has gotten worse than Microsoft with its update patterns. They seem to come at you hard and fast - where I work I see a Java update nearly every week and sometimes multiple times a week. That's probably what's freaking out your firewall software. Java is trying to access the update server to see if there's a new version available.
FWIW, you can probably leave it installed without any issues. Even if it's running in the background, it probably isn't using many CPU time slices unless it's actually required when Firefox is executing a Java app.
Just my $.02.

| 5. removing Java Quick Starter |

If you install the latest Java Runtime (Java 6 Update 11), it automatically installs an add-on in Firefox without asking you. It's called Java Quick Starter. You can't uninstall through Firefox. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=921325

| 6. Well, everything seems OK now so I guess I can ignore it. |

It seemed to want to connect a whole bunch that first day and the firewall was popping up a lot asking permission - and THAT tends to freak me out. Now it is "quiet" and I haven't noticed any problems.
