| Router & Windoze problems |
|
Howdy ya'll.
My granddaughter Gabby is trying to connect to my wireless router. She gets a working link for maybe 2 or 3 seconds and it goes away.
Her PC is Windoze 7, mine is XP.
Some other problems I noticed:
My machine times out when trying to access 198.168.1.1 ?? I'm using Firefox 3.6.3; Gabby is using Internet Exploder, version 8.0.7600.16385.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?
TIA

but for the second part of your problem, it would make no difference.
First, unplug the router and modem for a minute, then plug back in and leave them until all the lights are back on again.
In your XP start menu/Run type in cmd to bring up a black window. Then at the prompt type in without the quote marks 'ipconfig /all' (one space before the slash). You will see a list of network settings.
The number of the default gateway should be the browser address for your router configuration. Are you sure it's 198... and not 192...? Different routers brands have different addresses, a common one is 192.168.0.1
On edit: Another thought - is your grandaughter's computer in the same workgroup? Default Win7 is WORKGROUP, WinXP is MSHOME. To change, right click my computer, Properties, Computer Name.

My broadband modem is plugged directly into my PC. I have no clue on how or when that happened.
Thanks for the tips!

I have 4 computers and three of them (and the wireless router) are on the other side of the house, 40 feet away from my computer. My computer was constantly losing the router and the speed was half of what the other computers get, so last week I tried a Netgear xavb2001 Powerline kit for $99 at Staples and now my speed is doubled and equal to the machine directly connected to the router with no setup, no running cables through walls and ceilings, no dropped connections. It's like a miracle. Just plug it into the electrical wall socket then into the Lan port on both ends and voila, a connection.
