Q. re:download/upload speed. Can someone please help?

Here is today's result of an online speed test for my 3mg wireless dsl service. I've run this test several times before and the result was always about 1.50 for download and .50 for upload which (I'm told) is not very good either. But today's results!?! WTH?

Could the problem be my dsl service or my laptop? The laptop is a 5 month old Dell Inspiron 1545 w/intel pentium duo core t4400, 64 bit. Please forgive my woeful lack of knowledge on this kind of stuff. I'm not sure you even need to know about the computer and/or if so, whether I've provided anything relevant.

However, I probably ought to add that I can't help but wonder if it has more to do w/my service. Especially in light of the fact that just last week, my entire State was without (TDS) internet service for a day and a half, due they said, to "a broken circuit".

Bottom line... Do you think the problem is due to my computer, my TDS dsl service, or a combination of both possibly? An answer to this question and any info, advice, ect. you may have to offer would be greatly appreciated... BTW, I intend to call my server later today if my computer is still running this slow by then.

1. I'd say ISP problem.

Have the phone company do a line check on your phone line-if it's excessively noisy that will contribute to the slowdown. Reboot your modem-turn it off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.
If you know someone else with a laptop, have them bring it over and check speed with theirs-if it's still slow then it's definitely not your computer-which I doubt anyway.

I'm not complaining and can live w/this type of speed, but still, wouldn't you say this isn't very good for 3mg dsl? I wonder if it has anything to do w/this parallel universe I seem to be living in here in rural Maine... lol. No cell phone signals here at all (for example) even with different cell service providers. It drove my 25 yr old daughter nuts the last time she came home for an extended visit.

3. The small print says "Up to 3mbps"

so if you're getting 2.95 you're doing pretty good. Upload speed is always a fraction of download speed.

5. Lucky you, don't have that here.

That's about average for me. The UP TO 3mbps I'm paying for. Unfortunately I'm near the end of the 18,000 ft DSL limit for my node and that brings it down a little. ATT has U-Verse available for me but I don't want their cable and I ESPECIALLY don't want their damn 2Wire modem/router.

6. I think I would have been about 15,000 ftt away from the DSL node

I went with Comcast. Now I have FIOS, which is verizon, but it is fiber optic, so distance doesn't degrade the signal. I think DSL is what keep the Verizon rating down. But so far, I am quite happy with it. Had it since about February, and have had no down time at all.

7. Wow yours is worse then mine.

How does MiniMe get such speed w/her service? What is the difference between ours and her's?. When I signed up w/my ISP they told me that it was the fastest speed available. So when I saw a thread in the Lounge w/everyone posting the results of their speed test and compared mine w/theirs, I wondered why mine was so different. The only one w/a lower speed was someone on dialup... and now you.

I now 'get' that part thanks to your explanation from one of your other replies... However what is it that makes MiniMe and everyone else's faster? Could it be that broadband is different from DSL and you and I have DSL?

Sorry about all the dumb questions Hobbit. You've been more then generous w/your help already. I'm just learning the ropes w/computer stuff and have to admit that my understanding of it would probably be about the equivalent of a first grader trying to make sense of HS calculous...lol :blush:

As I mentioned earlier, I'm ok w/the speed I have. It's adequate enough for all my online needs. But I'm just curious about these differences. Again thanks Hobbit (or anyone else willing to explain this to me) :-)

8. MiniMe has fiber optic service

that is orders of magnitude faster than either DSL or cable.

Technically DSL could be much faster but the phone companies don't want to spend money upgrading their lines and equipment if they aren't forced to. why should they, in most cases they have a monopoly and a cash cow.
