| What do y'all think of Win 7? |
|
We've all had a while to decide whether it's a good'un or not. Personally, I would rather bask in the noxious farts straight from Satan's bottom that use a computer loaded with Win 7, but that's just my opinion.
Dislikes, in no particular order are:
-The folksy language; What do you want to do? Join a ....network (I know, not exact, but I can't bear to boot up the W7 machine to grab a direct quote)
-The start menu; extra clicks to find the proggies you need (and fuck that, listing recently used. Just makes it that much slower when you work with many programs)
-Networking in general. Sluggish, doesn't play well with other OSs. The 'Diagnose' dialogue. What a fucking joke.
-Control panel - a mess.
-Systray - likewise
-The amount of time it takes to get round all the fucking notifications for this, for that and turn them all off.
-The 'library' system. I've been using computers for 30 years and know how to create and name a folder and place it where I want it to be.
Overall, it's not a PRODUCTIVE operating system. Sure, I know times are changing and most people diddle around, using their machines to amuse themselves. I need mine to work; quickly, productively with no fuss. For this, considering that I need to sync files with the office network, XP just cannot be beaten. Sure, it has it's problems but so far, Win 7 included, XP is the best OS that Microsoft has produced.
Side note: Had to get a new desktop box last week. Went for the Phenom II, 6 core. 16 fucking seconds from pressing the button to a working desktop. XP of course.

That's its strong point.
You're right about tweaking everything. It's a real PITA compared to XP.

| 4. That's how I feel about it, and some of those "features" |
|
are just plain frigging obnoxious, like the way a window reverts to the desktop when you let go of the mouse to type something into a box on the screen. You have to go back and tap the mouse to get it back. Some feature. I'd love to get whoever decided to put that one in alone in a dark alley some day.
Win7 was a step backwards for a lot of users, especially users like me with less than perfect eyesight. Not only is it more difficult to get to the tweaks thanks to their redesigned and largely useless control panel, some of them are no longer possible.
XP is their best OS to date. At some point, they're going to have to realize that and keep it going.

The Library system doesn't bother me, I just ignore it for the most part. I've tweaked it a lot, but then, I spent a lot of time tweaking XP, too.
I jumped straight from XP to Win7, as I went without a computer for a year or so and never got Vista. My daughter had Vista and upgraded to Ubuntu, but she's tired of it and we're installing Win7 one of these days.
The only problem I've had with Win7 was getting Civ2 to run on it, but that only took a little while to figure out.
It's very stable, and it does what I want it to do without much anguish. So I'm happy. Haven't had any problems with networking or anything, and I haven't run into any problems with the "notifications" you mention.

Granted, that's probably because they only let it run on certain hardware but at least it hasn't crashed or locked up lately.

| 7. I don't really think about the OS -- so it I guess it's alright |
|
I do web development, use multiple web browsers on this old laptop. Occasionally use OpenOffice, Paint.net. Things seem faster than XP. Visual Studio 2010 in particular would barely run with XP and now runs pretty well on 7.
Since I've had it, the OS has never crashed, which my GFs Mac does regularly.
I know the file system fairly well (having programmed for 25 years). But I also like not having to think about the file system when saving a document. If I want to save something in Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc, why should I have to look at the whole file path?

Tried a few weeks and gave up. Formatted the hard drive and went back to XP. I use windows only for work that requires adobe suite. For all the heavy lifting I use my LFS machine.

I dual boot my machine with XP/7. I do a LOT of multi-tracking with Adobe Audition 3 and it sucks memory like I do ...ah..like a good joint...anyway.. ...the 16 gig of memory comes in handy with window7-64 bit. (of course, I could do the same thing with XP if I had the 64 bit version...which I don't) :)

because the laptop came with Vista and well, Vista sucks. It was constantly hanging up when setting up a system restore point.
Windows 7 is okay but I still prefer XP that I have on my desktop. I think XP is by far the best windows OS.

It came with vista and couldn't get the sound or wireless to work with XP-no drivers found anywhere(I hate all that proprietary crap)
I'm now running 7 Pro X64 on it and once I tweaked a few settings, it appears to behave so far. Though I might end up putting the new Ubuntu 10.10 on it.

| 14. I have a dual install Win7 64bit and Ubuntu 10 |
|
I like both OSes. Obviously, being a gamer, I use Windows much more than I use Ubuntu.
There is one thing that Win7 does much, much, much better than XP ever did, and that's games. For example:
My hardware is this:
AMD Phenom 9500 quad core CPU 4GB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz OCZ RAM NVidia GeForce 9500 GT 512M PCIe (x2) XFX nForce 750a SLI Socket AM2 mobo
When I was running WinXP Pro 64-bit on the above hardware, I installed fraps on a lark to see what sort of performance I was getting. In Squeenix's "The Last Remnant" (released between Final Fantasy 12 and Final Fantasy 13), I was getting about 23-26 frames per second with all settings maxed. "Left 4 Dead" and "Left 4 Dead2" were giving me not quite 30fps. This was, by the way, on a "clean" install of XP.
Then I installed Windows 7, which includes Directx 11 (XP only supports up to DX9). My performance as reported by fraps shot through the roof- I was getting a consistent 56-60FPS in all three games!!
That's about double the performance on the exact same hardware.
Needless to say, I very very quickly dumped XP for good. It just doesn't even come close to Win7 when it comes to gaming.

since you obviously didn't really have a question. Everything you listed is not found in my experience with win 7. But then again I can get over my personal fears and actually look beyond folksy language.

That's me you're talking to. *I'm* the one who has a bias against Microsoft in general, not Canetoad. She uses Windows on a regular basis.
Seriously, guy, I don't get your attitude with people. You're just so caustic. I *expect* that with me. I'm caustic too, so if you want to piss on me, go ahead. I kinda enjoy it actually. But, I think Canetoad was just asking a legitimate question. What's the problem?

Computers has a much easier time getting rid of machines packed with XP than with Vista or Win 7.
Consumers know what they like, and XP seems to be it.

|
understandably, I will add, and they are scared because 7 is relatively new. And XP works. I got a new computer with Windows 7 on it, and I actually like it. I have not had a crash since I got the computer in February. It is a marked improvement over my XP box, although most of that is due to the updated processer (i7) and the upgraded memory (8gb ddr3). But it has been very stable, and multitasking is a breeze with the upgraded memory.

on a fairly new and gutsy laptop. The intent was to eventually load the desktops with Win 7 but now I've decided to go retrograde and put XP on the laptop.
There are many features on Win 7 that I like such as clipping tool, but overall, for my usage, it's no improvement on XP.

Had to switch from Vista to Win 7 because of a major screw up and my son installed Win 7.
I have a new copy of XP Home that I never had installed and am thinking of going with that. Don't know if I should or not. Kid is busy moving from NJ to NC so I need to wait a few more weeks for him to have time to fool with this.
I loved XP, sort of got used to Vista but, Win7 is imho a pos. I'm not computer savvy - but I hate everything about this OS.
