Internet problem

Here's the problem: I had connected my cable internet directly to my desktop, bypassing the modem to gain some speed. I needed to get on the internet from my laptop today, so I connected the modem to the router, the router to the desktop. I was able to access the internet from my laptop but not my desktop. HUH? That seems weird and I can't figure it out.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm baffled.

Otherwise, nobody can do anything except make random guesses

I'm happy to make a random guess, but it's not likely to be very helpful: I might guess your laptop has some hardware that your desktop doesn't, and you're just using your desktop as a really clunky and expensive wire to pass the signal to your laptop, where it can actually be used

I disconnected it and re-connected it and it's working fine again. I think what happened (and I'm just guessing) that it had something to do with renewing my ISP address. Earlier I had plugged the modem into the router and then the router into the desktop. This time, I plugged the router into the computer first, it renewed the ISP and THEN I plugged the modem into the router.

3. Misunderstood your OP. Thought you were "bypassing the modem" and wondering

why you had no internet access
