Is there any app software out there that would allow me to watch a live cam at the same time that I'm reading DU?

Special software probably is not necessary. If the cam is online, have another browser window open. Use windows instead of 'split screen'.

Both VLC and MPC can stream from other devices. What is the source of the camera's video ie. is it at a remote location or in another part of your house?

2. It depends on your setup; this isn't a simple software solution

If you want to have a camera on one physical screen while DU is on another, most modern video cards priced $100+ have two video ports in order to support something called "dual head", which means two physical displays.

If you want a "picture in picture", you're probably looking for a separate TV card (or USB tuner) that supports that feature. You'll definitely get what you pay for if you go that route, but if you do and do it right (i.e., buy the right product) you can turn your PC into a Tivo that works from X_supported_Source. You could conceivably turn your PC into a full-featured home security system complete with HD video in, digital enhancement, and timestamps, IF you have the right software. (If all you're using is a webcam of some sort, you probably already have the features you're looking for.)

If you're using an off-the-shelf home security system, I'd go with a decent PCI express video card with two DVI outputs, and send the video from the camera through your PC to a second display (the system should support this). The software that comes with the system should allow you to record the video to your hard drive, stream it to the web, or any of a good half dozen other useful features.

I guess what my rambling boils down to is, "what exactly are you trying to accomplish, and how?"

How much would a system like that cost? I have a backyard habitat and want to be able to see the animals that come into the yard I can see their nests up high in the trees I'm guessing possum. Definitely armadillos, and of course, the rabbits. Heck, why not a Luna moth?

Are there camcorders with roving and focusing features that I can operate from my keyboard?
