Simple solution to cool a warm modem.

This is the second DSL modem. These things do run kinda warn. The first one lasted less than two years before it became thermal sensitive and would just quit after an hour or so of use. Putting in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes would revive it for another hour or so.

So when I got tired of that and I sprung for a replacement, I rigged up a fan from a deceased computer I had salvaged for parts.
The fan is rated at 12V @ 100ma and I run it off a 12V 300ma wall wart.


I know it doesn't look pretty, but it works.

1. Also...

Be sure to plug that bad-boy (Modem/Bridge) into a UPS or Surge Suppressor... I lost two of those very same models to power surges during an electrical storm. The worst part about that model is if you purchased it from AT&T, they have branded firmware that locks you out of all the nice features of that unit... I finally switched to a Siemens after the second one bit the dust.

Good thinking on the fan! I remember how hot mine used to run. I always wondered if my house would be up in flames when I returned.

4. The modem is plugged into the UPS side of of an APC

With DSL, when the light go out, we're still on line.

5. Too noisy, besides it looks as it it would suck the windows out of the frame.

3. I just drilled a few holes in the case

About 8 ¼-in holes in top and bottom of case and stood it vertically. Made a noticeable difference in temp.
