In Ubuntu 11.04, with the latest nvidia drivers, does anyone know how to

change the desktop resolution to a nonstandard resolution?

I need to set it to 1786x994 because of the overscan on my display. What file do I need to edit, and where is it located?

And apparently there are some pretty big differences between 10.04 and 11.04.

Apparently I have to create a custom modeline for the resolution I want. Ack.

Does anyone know how to do this properly?

4. FIXED

Using the dedicated PC port on my TV worked wonders (!). I'm now running Windows and Ubuntu both in native 1920x1080 resolution.

My only question at this point is HDCP. The port on the TV that I changed to is a VGA port, not an HDMI port. This bothers me.
