Looking for good spam filter.

I'm currently relying on my server, but they don't delete enough
very obvious spam. I tried Mailwasher, but I still had to delete
most stuff myself, and it also interfered with some other functions
on my computer, so I had to uninstall it.

I like to use Netscape for mail, and that seems to limit the systems
I can use - Qurb looks good, but only works with Outlook Express.
Does anyone know of any good spam filters that work well with
Netscape - I don't want one that goes berserk and deletes everything
with an attachment, but one that will get rid of the most obvious
before I even see it. And I figure if I have to pay for that, that's
okay as long as it's really good.

1. Well I tell ya what worked best for me

though it involved some trickery, and you might not have this capability:

I own my own domain, and have control over the e-mail accounts. I can create an actual POP/IMAP account, or just a forwarder.

What I did was, change my original POP account to a forwarding address. I reroute it to my Gmail account, which does a fantastic job at spam catching. Then I set my Gmail account to automatically forward the rest to a new (unpublished) POP account I created.

One thing you can also look into is using Mozilla's Thunderbird mail client. It will import your Netscape mail and has a built-in "intelligent" (i.e., learning) spam filter.

2. I'm not very computer-literate.

I have a small business, where I use the computer a lot, and most of
what I've learned I've picked up by reading or helpful advice from
friends.

But Mozilla sounds promising - I actually tried Mozilla a couple of
times as my browser, but I found there were things (especially on
DU) that it wouldn't upload properly - like icons and such, so I
uninstalled it. Would I have to return to Firefox to be able to
use the email service?

3. Firefox is the browser part of the Mozilla project

Thunderbird is the email componant. Mozilla began as a do-everything alternative to IE, but later development was separated into work on these two main componants. I use them (Thunderbird and Firefox) separately, but my understanding is that current versions of Mozilla now incorporates these two projects. I haven't heard of any problems with DU and Firefox, although I hear that there are some sites that are written to work only with IE. My recommentation would be to install both Thunderbird and Firefox and give them a try.

4. ot - Firefox "open in IE extension"

It adds a context menu item to "open link target in Internet Explorer".
Very handy if one runs into problems with sites written with the most nods to IE.

I installed Firefox a few weeks ago, and am sorry I waited so long.

6. You can have both Firefox and IE on your computer

Remember, Matilda, if you install Firefox it doesn't mean you can't use Internet Explorer. You can use either one. I have my default browser set to Firefox, but of course have to keep Internet Explorer available in case I ever get brave and go do my Microsoft Updates --- only because Microsoft won't let you go there with Firefox.

You can also choose to set your "default" browser to be either IE or Firefox, but just click on the Firefox browser or the IE browser when you want to go online with whichever one you want.

The settings in Firefox can be adjusted too and it might have been just a settings problem you had and not the Firefox program itself.

You can call in questions during the show and they prefer to hear from the beginning to intermediate users and avoid getting into computer-geek stuff.

I also use their website to find links to places to get stuff that they trust as safe, and general plain-language advice on how to doo lots of stuff.

7. Mozilla ...

Mozilla is still an individual project incorporating several features including a web browser, e-mail client, chat client, and an html editor. FireFox and Thunderbird are somewhat different.

I also am not aware of any problems with FireFox and DU. I was using FireFox before I became a member of DU and have never experienced a problem. I access DU with IE from work, and the only difference I notice is that the popup that sometimes appears with the main page cannot be blocked with a standard IE install.

Sites developed to work only with IE generally have Active-X controls, which provide a security risk. Some sites are also not HTML standards compliant and will only appear correctly in the non-standard IE.
