I just had to share that I have two wonderful cats, and they crack me up!
We adopted Gary and Coconut (my 7- and 8-year old girls named them) from the animal shelter 2 months ago. We got them as babies, and they're now about 4 months old.
Coconut is an orange striped tabby cat with these amazing markings. He has a circle on one of his sides and very visible stripes on his front legs. Gary is all black with the same markings in silver. They were from the same litter.
Has anyone ever heard of a cat doing this? Last night, I found one of Coconut's toys--a small fluffy ball. I showed it to him and he immediately put it in his mouth and ran downstairs. I went downstairs to see what he was doing, and he ran right to Gary. Gary tried to get the ball, and Coconut growled at him! I've never heard a cat growl like that. It was as if Coconut was showing Gary his toy and saying, "Look what I have and you can't have it!"
Coconut continued to taunt Gary--walking up to him with the ball and growling. It cracked me up!
Then, Coconut started doing this to me! He kept jumping up on the ottoman and showing me the toy, then growling at me. I took it from him, threw it and he ran and got it and jumped up next to me--with the ball in his mouth and growled. I threw it again and he ran and got it. We did this for a half hour! I guess this cat likes to play fetch.
Today, Coconut has had the ball in his mouth and the growling continues.
I know it's a bit nutty to be so excited about the things your cat does, but I just love these two little guys and I'm so amused by them.
Poor Gary, though! We have to buy him a toy now!
Has anyone had cats do unusual things like this? Or is this not so unusual?

| 1. Are you sure they aren't part dog? You'll have to get pictures for us! |

I've had a few cats (one was a foster) who liked to fetch, and several who carried toys in their mouths and wanted praise, but never a "taunter" :-)!

I once had a cat that would fetch..but she never growled.
One of my current cats will growl if she is playing with a catnip toy and one of the other cats comes close. I am sure she has no intention of sharing...and that is what she is saying.
I have never seen the taunting behavior that you describe...but then again..anything a cat does would not surprise me.

I've had a kitty who loved to fetch and counted his bringing me back a crumpled up cigarette pack 23 times in a row. The girl we adopted in March loves toys more than any kitty we've ever had and will attack her adoption mate if she catches him with one of her toys. In her opinion, ALL the toys belong to her. Thanks for sharing such a cute story!

It does sound like dog behavior. My Siamese Pad Thai likes to fetch little rolled up foil balls I make for him. He will continually bring them to me and ask me to throw them for him. I have seen him occasionally offer one of these sparkley balls to Lily, my older female. But he knows better than to try and taunt her.
