1. It depends how much exposure they will have to other dogs.

Almost every place that boards dogs requires it. I never had it for my last dog- and he never got sick- until it was required at a place where he was boarded. It wasn't too expensive and it protected him from bordetella.

But my current dog goes to the dog park every day and meets lots of other dogs, so he is vaccinated.

2. If you are boarding your dog, or taking it to an obedience class or the like,

a bordetella vaccine will be required. It isn't a shot, it is an intranasal vaccine.
