My beloved 11-year-old ragdoll mix was euthanized today.
He was a wonderful cat who helped me foster and was kind to every person and every cat he ever met. He had an aggressive cancer that could not be treated successfully.

We adopted him when he was a young cat from a shelter where he was left, with just about every parasite you can imagine, though the family claimed he was an exclusively indoor kitty. Well, at least they didn't dump him on the street when he was no longer a cute little kitten.

Despite these bad beginnings, he was big hearted from the moment he came home with me, but I had to teach him not to bite so hard when he played.

He would snuggle every night, purr the moment you picked him up, whether he was in pain or not.

Some of you may remember a photo I posted a long time ago of him with two of our orphan fosters, who went on to get a great home:

My two other kitties and I will miss him terribly.

11. I feel so bad for you. He looks like he was a giant, sweet, mellow guy.
Today is 3 months since we found my much loved cat Stinker dead in our living room of a stroke or aneurysm (the vet thinks). It seems as if the pain will never go away. Stinker was about as old as your boy and I always thought he'd live to be really old. It's so sad and I'm so sorry for your loss.

15. I am very sorry about your loveball.
What a shock it must have been to find him dead, at a middle age.

At 3 months, the pain is still so acute. I can only hope for you that it will ease a bit in time.

My boy was about 15 lbs. and had the ragdoll personality to the 1000th degree. In my little house there was only seating space for about 10 people with extra chairs pulled in the room for a party, but he would always try to sit on one of them to be part of the action--even when someone sat down on the edge of the chair, he wouldn't move until I would go lift him off and tell him to be polite and let a guest sit there. When I adopted a kitty about a year ago, the newcomer changed within hours from an upset, spitting, yelling, scared little monster in a shelter cage, to a calm companion sitting inches away from my big guy, who seemed to say, "yes, I know no one should mess with you--you're a tough guy--but really, there's no need for that here. Let's be friends." I could go on and on...

I also thought I would get more time with my sweetie. I guess he was such a rare good boy that unfortunately fate saw fit to give him a rare disease.

especially a mensch like your boy. He sounds a lot like my Oberon, who also absolutely loves fostering kittens.

Maybe our cats share a little bit of the same soul.

20. I think they were/ are two peas in a pod-and part of your kitty lives on in my
Oberon. After knowing so many cats over the years I've come to believe that there's a collective "forest cat" (Maine Coon, Siberian, Ragdoll, Norwegian, etc) soul, a "tuxedo cat" soul, a "Siamese" soul, a "Turkish Angora" soul and so forth...it's almost like a race memory and/ or essence that is shared by all members of that group, even though each is an individual. I hope that you will adopt another forest cat some day to help you with your fosters, because I'm sure that a little piece of your kitty that has crossed the rainbow bridge will live on inside another.

All share the same soul. :)

My daughter has a big grey Maine Coon too--a lovely breed. Well, he's a mix I think. And now they have a new "little sister" for him. Here are Charlie and Meowzors:

26. I don't want people to think I am just kicking my thread but I do want to thank everyone
who has posted additional kind comments, and anyone else who might later (I won't reply again to avoid kicking). I really appreciate your expressing your thoughts; they helped me through a very sad time.

We still miss him terribly and the household feels out of balance. Time will heal us.
