My rescue cat is dying! :-(

Hello DU pet lovers,

Some of you may remember a thread I posted about a cat I adopted from a local shelter last September: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=243&topic_id=43281

A few weeks back I noticed that he wasn't peeing in his box, then he wasn't as fun, very lazy, sleeping a lot, his appetite wasn't normal. I knew I had to take him into the vet. Which I did yesterday. The Vet told me that they discovered a mass in his abdomen that was most likely causing him to be constipated and such. Then suggested I bring him in this morning for an Ultrasound and get a sample to have biopsied. Even though I have to wait a few days for the results, preliminaries indicate lymphoma, which sucks ass. This is such a total drag and I needed to share.

At least he was loved for a while... I know it hurts. I have been through losing a rescue myself. Sometimes I wish I could stop caring, but I can't.

I have nothing to say about a cat that is suffering. It is very sad.

You've done all you can.

This is a lesson for other pet owners however. When a pet displays behavior that is inappropriate or highly uncommon for a pet (like a cat not using his litter box), something is likely very wrong.

7. There is a high probability that this cat was sick when I got him.

This is less than 10 months that I've had him and was told that he had a clean bill of health. I think the previous owners are lying. :mad:

He'll be pain free in a few hours. :-(

8. well I sure know how you feel!

You are doing the right thing, please know that. I had the same thing happen to me with a dog that I adopted. She was very sick and I ended up having to have her put down after I had her for a few short months and thousands of dollars in expenses.

That said, just think the good parts about how you gave this poor cat a place and a home at the end of life. I'm sure there was lots of love too, something the cat may have never known.

So the cat will not die in vain and I'd go after the people that lied to you if at all possible.

Try not to let this eat you up alive like I have done; don't let it scar you for life. However, nothing hurts more than knowing the truth as ugly as it can be at times.

Again, so sorry for you and the poor cat! :cry: :hug:

He's on the other side now, I brought him in last evening. It was agonizing as you can imagine but I did do the right thing and I am so glad that he isn't suffering anymore. I'll miss that little rascal, he was such a good cat. :-(

he was suffering and you cared enough to not want him to go through any more of that. My deepest sympathy to you on the loss of your kitty. I've been where you are and it never gets any easier, but you will always have great memories of him. Peace to you in the coming days and weeks as you grieve your loss.

Maybe that is why he chose you. I know he is grateful to you for the love and affection you gave him while he was in your care. He will probably be back for a visit. Just wait for those little paws kneading the covers when you get into bed at night.

I'll miss him biting and pawing my nose. He was a great alarm clock. I was certainly happy to have him.

17. I had a little cat who lived with me for 20 years. After she left, I

could feel her kneading the covers and settling in for the night for many years. I think that other kitties have visited me as well. It is always a sweet, welcome visit--no Steven King stuff for me.

18. my parent's dog still visits frequently

He's been gone since the end of 2005 but I often hear him at night. He snored real loud and slept in the hallway (in order to keep an eye on the whole house -- quite possible from the spot he used to sleep in!).

Your cat is still around as he loved both you and his new home.

Be glad to know he is pain free now and no longer suffering and be prepared for more "visits" so to speak! :)
