13. I'm so sorry your mother died and so happy that you found peace before she

did and that you were able to be with her when she left this earth. Be assured that no parent gets up in the morning and says to themselves, today I'm going to be mean to my children. Whatever demons haunted her, I'm sure she didn't mean it and she probably thought she was doing it for your good. She could have been treated the same way and knew no other way of parenting. My mother had so many fears in her life--after a failed first marriage, she feared her children would go astray, as their father did. She feared that I would be left, destitute, unless I had a solid, secure job, even though the profession was not one I would have chosen to follow. And part of her sorrow was that she felt she never made up for the loss of an older brother, who died as a baby only a year before she was born. He was always seen as the "golden child", and his siblings lived with his ghost all their lives.
