The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au.

But doomsday sayers should be careful about speculation on this one. If the star does go super-nova, Earth will be showered with harmless particles, according to Carter. "They will flood through the Earth and bizarrely enough, even though the supernova we see visually will light up the night sky, 99 per cent of the energy in the supernova is released in these particles that will come through our bodies and through the Earth with absolutely no harm whatsoever," he told news.com.au.

(no pun intended) :)

Big stars don't last long. When the dinosaurs looked into the night sky, Betelgeuse wasn't there. Betelgeuse first pierced the night sky as a blue white star when humans diverged from chimpanzees (arguably, humanity and Betelgeuse share the same birthday, give or take a few hundred thousand years). Betelgeuse was the first star we were able to image as a disk (other than the sun of course). And Betelgeuse, being a really big star, is dying. We can see enough of its surface to know that it has begun its final collapse.

Exactly when the shell will bounce of the core and go kablooie is uncertain by as much as a few hundred years, but it will be soon, astronomically speaking (no guarantee it will happen in our lifetimes, sorry. It will be an amazing sight for a while). When it fades into oblivion, as it will, it will take the sky's most prominent constellation with it. Orion will lose his shoulder and won't look anything like Orion anymore.

This is the only part of any real concern. What will this do to the world's nocturnal life and the rest of the plant life that depends on a night?

I never read Arthur Clarke's book "2010" but did see the movie and never felt the fullness of awe and happiness as depicted by the characters in the end. Six months of twilight instead of a real night would not be good for our ecosystems. I understand the loss of Betelgeuse won't last six months (that's just a reference to having Jupiter as a second sun in relation to the Earth's solar orbit) but a sky that isn't night when it should be will have some effect on pretty much everything, including our ability to sleep ;)
