I feel close to quitting my job.

I am going back to school in the fall. I feel like I wasted too much time on this job. Why? Even though I know more than everyone else on my shift,I don't get the recognition that I deserve.I do work that is being done in a job grade level higher than mine.So instead of just adding me the shift with the higher grade level,I am getting shafted left and right. My only set back is the salary I would lose and searching for a new job. Every job is like this where everyone gets shafted. I just need a positive change.

1. Every job is not like that, so keep hoping

You will find something more satisfying one day if you stay open to the opportunities and keep networking. There's no doubt the economy is really tough right now, everywhere.

I don't know the particulars of what you do or where you work, but is it possible for you to go to your supervisor and explain, rationally, without emotion, that you're doing higher grade level work and that you would like to be compensated at that level? Sometimes employers just don't even realize how their decisions make you feel unless you tell them.

Better still, if you could offer them the solution to the problem. I'm doing the work of the higher grade level, there's a shift at that level open, I think you should put me into that shift and pay me acordingly. That way I'll keep doing the good work I've done for you.

If they can't move you up, can you stop doing that higher level work? Gee, I'd like to help you out, boss, but I'm already doing this, this and that. I just don't see how I can fit that higher grade level stuff into my work load right now. Maybe you need to move me to that higher grade level shift?

Or, like you said, you could look for another job. Nothing wrong with looking. I recommend you don't quit this one until you find the next one, though. There's still six months between now and Fall.

Do I sound like your mother? Sorry. My stepdaughter is in the same situation, miles away from me, and I have this conversation with her almost weekly.

I have been putting down all of my ideas on paper so that I can talk to my manager but I am trying to lose the emotion before I do so.

2. I get very frustrated with people

who keep on putting up with crap in their jobs without saying anything or without leaving and going to a workplace where they'll be treated better.

My sister has a job she likes, is paid well, and so on. She's been there for about eleven years, and has quite a bit of accumulated vacation time that she feels she can't take, because here immediate boss is one of those whose life is work, and makes it very difficult for employees to take the time off they're entitled to. I keep on telling my sister that just because her boss doesn't take time off, doesn't mean she shouldn't The only way to cure the other woman of her attitude is for my sister to take her vacation time.

Similarly, in you situation you need to think through what your alternatives are. DO NOT do work above your grade level without being paid for it for longer than about twenty minutes. And don't hesitate to look around for a job where you'll be appreciated and treated well. At the end of the day your job won't take care of you, co-workers and unappreciative bosses won't care about you. A little healthy selfishness is called for. Yes, when you're at work you need to work appropriately hard, do your tasks, don't cruise the internet, and so on and so forth. But in the end you have to look out for yourself.

Why are you returning to school? Is it to get a degree for a better job? Will you be working while going to school?
