| O/T - anyone have any good natural remedies for doggie itching? |
|
Said doggie is doing everything recommended by the vet, including a change in diet....but still is having a heck of a time with itching, especially in the middle of the night. I have a cortizone spry that works a little, but hesitate to use a lot of that. Cool baths with oatmeal and/or aloe & tea tree oil, hot spot gels, I've tried it all...any other suggestions?

It might help if you mentioned the type of dog or length of its hair. Good luck to you and your little friend.

Even though we have changed diet as a precaution, I'm pretty sure the problem is environmental. We've recently moved from a downtown house with practically no yard, to a suburban house with a large yard and lots of tropical plants (Northern Florida)

that was allergic to grass. He got shots, but Benadryl might work too.

My aunt used to give her dog brewer's yeast - sprinkled on top of his kibble - because it helped with his skin irritations.

| 6. After a bath, try rubbing a little almond oil into his skin. |

The brewer's yeast I have also heard of.

| 7. Do you feed your dog dry dog food? |
|
Try wet, and mix in a couple of those fish oil caplets (you have to pierce them and squeeze them onto the food).

| 8. My vet pinpoints quite a bit of allergies to the comercial food |

containing corn & wheat. It would be the first thing he would say. Absolutely no corn. He recommends Evo - however, it is quite expensive - it has no grain and only protein. Yet, since it is highly concentrated food, you feed much less - and you will notice, they are not that hungry between meals.
Mine are also allergic to flea bites - one bite is enough to show a reaction. I had to put Advantix on them, but the chewing/itching stopped in a couple of days.
When I have a chance I will ask my vet..

| 9. Vitamin E oil on the spots and MSM powder mixed in food |
|
Vitamin E oil always helps me heal my minor wounds so i either just stick a pin in a capsule or for a critter that is easier to give too much too I get a food grade vitamin e oil either from the drug store or ordered online. Be sure to get one that says it is edible as some have stuff added so it is only intended use on human skin which is not licked and consumed by the wearer.
MSM is a form of sulfur that some people finds helps with allergies. A friend of my Mother has severe asthma that improved some after using MSM. She went from needing emergency room visits 1 or more times a month to maybe once a year. She also was able to reduce her use of inhalers. It is also good for joints (a few studies show this as i recall) and improves hair and nails so it *might* help w skin healing in general.
